Default Are people blind?

From a recent article...

Quote:
The difference between HD and BD and DVD on sets under 50 inches is not all that great...
I get very frustrated when I hear people say things like this:

- Upscaled DVDs look virtually the same as Blu-rays.
- There's no difference between 720p and 1080p on anything besides huge TVs.
- 1080i and 1080p are indistinguishable.
- You can't actually see the judder in movies at 1080p60 anyway.
- There's no quality difference between component and HDMI.
- Lower bit rate encodes (ala HD DVD) don't look any different.

These are rediculous things to say which I often hear cited as facts. I have to wonder if the people saying them have inch thick glasses or something. Because these differences are not inobvious. Even on screens which are not huge.

I think it's a legitimate opinion to say that the difference isn't all that important. Being sharper doesn't make a bad movie into a good one. But to say that the visible difference doesn't even exist is unreasonable.

And that's especially true when you start stacking multiple of these differences together. You start getting some large differences in quality indeed.

Why do people say these things? Is it spin? Is it sour grapes for things they can't afford? Can they really not see the differences?

Some people think there's no difference between a VW Beetle and 911 GT3, they don't appreciate the finer things in life.

Sadly I hear even some people on this very site tell me that I can't possibly tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on my 40" 1080p LCD.

I can easily tell the difference between a 1280X1080 Plasma stretched pixel display and a full 1920X1080 LCD or Plasma panel both displaying a 1080 signal.

upscaled DVD's are mildly irritating, you can see distortions through out the image, because it's digital, upscaling is trying to expand apon information that is there but limited, kinda like asking a computer to guess at something, where as Laserdiscs (yes that old technology) I believe is analog, and would look good upscaled, could be wrong tho.

Hey now leave my air-cooled bugs alone.

And my upscaled DVD's vs Blu is night and day. Blu is better by far and I do wear glasses, lol.

Sadly, my own brother falls into this category.

Recently he bought a 50" 1080p TV, and since I only have a 720p/1080i TV right now, I took around 10 BDs over to his house to play on his PS3 and to check them out in 1080p.

He was unimpressed. He played the BD of American Psycho in his PS3, and the DVD version in his DVD player simultaneously. He kept going back and forth between the two images saying, "I don't see much of a difference. It's a little sharper, that's about it.".

Now whenever I mention to him about getting a new BD, he doesn't seem too interested.

Like anything, it depends on the movie.

I don't think comparing an upscaled House of the Flying Daggers to the BD version would do the conversation justice since the transfer is so-so. However, I did compare Curse of the Golden Flower (oppo 981-HD vs BLU) and there was a pronounced difference.

But so what. I personally don't care what someone else says. If they think upscaling is the same, have fun.

I own a 32" 720p, see my signature.

I see a HUGE difference between upconverted tp 1080p and high def native 720 to 1080p. I've seen Blu Ray and HD DVD movies with less than stellar PQ, and I've seen movies on both that I consider 10/10 PQ.

I can't tell anyone what they see, but with my SMALL 32" TV, I can't say my TV has the best picture, but I have yet to see any TV with a better picture (1080p and bigger sets included). I'll easily acknowledge that the TVs may have not been calibrated and the like but this is across friends 1080 setups and of course in more than 5 different stores with dozens of TVs including receiving 1080p signals. As a matter of fact, I was at the store with money in hand to buy a 1080p set (I am single and have the dough), but for a TV for my bedroom, it was not worth the "the upgrade" IN MY OPINION, not even to a 42" 1080p which is on the bigger side of a good fit for my setup.

Again, 32" is small. But for my eyes, I've seen comparable, but yet to see a better display 42" and below (range I was looking at)... in non ideal setting on sets not calibrated of course.

When I move out f my 1 bedroom in a few years, then I'll be in the market for a 60" range TV...

as a blind person i am offended by the title of this thread. but even blind people should be able to appreciate the uncompressed audio. some people are just idiots and don't want to see the difference.
