Yep. Do you know if it's stated Blu-ray for a while too? I haven't checked that, but I think that's usually a good sign it might get a physical release.

Nice. This one is long overdue for a release from Criterion. The stills look really great too.

I have the Eureka too, but I’ll gladly double dip. It’s my favorite Japanese horror film.

A lot of films have had “Blu-ray” listed on Janus’s site, but we haven’t received releases for a lot of them.

Hopefully, the disc will (finally) follow soon. I have the Eureka release and it's definitely one of the more mediocre-looking discs I own.

I did a comparison and it's a huge improvement already:

Note: I downscaled the Twitter images to 1920x1080 but the Eureka caps are in the wrong resolution (I didn't notice this until after I uploaded) and things such as geometry is more than likely not reflective of the master. Comparison 2 is not an exact frame.

I have the Eureka and I think there are far worse transfers for Japanese films(especially many releases from Arrow), but the 4K definitely looks like a massive improvement. Can’t wait!

I've been hoping for Criterion to finally release this for YEARS! Hopefully it's happening soon.

Thanks a lot for the comparisons, that looks great to me! Apparently this restoration came out on Blu-ray in Japan last November. I was just thinking yesterday of buying it, so news like this is a very welcome (and timely) surprise. The Criterion would have English subs and hopefully some nice extras. Curious if they'll go UHD with this.

I remember one of the New Years drawings had a bunch of X’s and a lot assumed it was for Cure.

Hell yes! This has been my most anticipated Criterion for years. Eagerly triple dipping from my HVE DVD and Eureka Blu. It’d be crazy if a couple of Kurosawa’s films could make the jump, too. So much of his non-Horror films are just unavailable outside of Japan, and even then his Horror films haven’t made the cross to Blu.

The transfer that Eureka used looks kinda dated now. The screenshots on the Janus tweet look striking. I think this just re-invigorated my interest for this film.
