Could be, it was one of the first movies to push the grain-vs-restoration issue.
But just as likely a repackaging to cash in on the traditional Memorial Day push. (Best to wait for some advance review before saying "Scott, you magnificent bastard, I bought your book!" ![]() |

The guys from The Digital Bits said that Fox was planning on re-doing the transfer in the near future. Hopefully this is that version.

Got the DNR version REALLY cheap so I checked it out, never had seen this movie before. It's BRILLIANT but one of the WORST cases of DNR I've ever seen... I mean holy crap George C. Scott seriously looks like a WAX figure throughout the film... This movie TOTALLY needs a remaster, and I will buy it |

There's a long-standing debate amongst BD enthusiasts regarding whether catalog titles should leave their grain untouched or have it digitally cleaned up. The pro-grain side feels that maintaining the natural grain found in celluloid is one of many benefits of BD's superior resolution and retains the original theatrical experience. The pro-cleanup side feels that a given movie should look as clean and noiseless as possible because it is presented in an HD format. The grain is removed through processes such as digital noise reduction since grain can resemble digital video noise.
These are, of course, over-simplifications. It's an issue that invokes a lot of exasperation from forum members because of how often, and heated, the discussion gets. When Patton was released on BD in 2008, it was ultimately seen as the one catalog BD title that really exemplified the division between collectors. The pro-grain side sees it as a complete debacle, while the pro-cleanup side sees it as one of the best restorations of a classic film. Either way, it has become the whipping boy for this very sticky issue. I found this article by film preservation expert Robert A. Harris, via The Digital Bits, to explain the more technical aspects of film restoration (using the then new release of Patton as a case study): http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...ris062408.html Hope this clarifies your question in a mostly unbiased way ![]() |

i on the other hand, would be willing to double-dip if this is the 000000.1% chance that it turns out with a new, improved transfer (and i also dig digibooks). it probably helped that i only got Patton for $4.33 when it was part of the 3-pack with Behind Enemy Lines and Rescue Dawn, which was $13 clearance when I got it at Blockbuster |

If it looks good now, imagine how good it will look with unfiltered 70mm detail and texture!

I love digibooks and would upgrade my current BD of this unforgettable film (along with another favorite of mine that Fox is repackaging in a digibook: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) but only after reviews confirm that the transfer (on each film) is improved.
That said there are still other films in Blu-ray books from Fox that I plan to buy: The Hustler, which is on preorder; All About Eve; Master and Commander, An Affair to Remember (maybe); and The Comancheros (maybe down the line). It's nice that Fox is starting to really pump out the digibooks. I can add some of them to the one and only Fox digibook that exists in my collection: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I hope that the rumors are true, and that Patton will be re-released in a correct version this time. Fox has really made a change for the best, and I'd consider them one of the best studios when catalog titles are concerned. I also hope they'll re-do The Longest Day, since that looked even worse than Patton. |

digitalbits is reporting that a "new" bd of Patton IS coming later this year, but will NOT be this digibook release.
This release will still be the original dnr disaster. well I guess this news would qualify as a perfect example of "good news, bad news". can't wait till the "real" release later in the year. ![]() |
