It's a Dreamworks film in the US, so who knows when we'll get it here.

I saw The Island on HBO HD and it looked really good. I would pick this up when it is released here, we just need Dreamworks to get off of its behind and sell us some BDs.

I don't think there's any PAL or NTSC for blu-ray, as the overseas retailers still mark region numbers for blu-ray which is obviously wrong. I've just ordered this as well, seeing how Mediadis sucks and won't ship this title to me in the states.

All posts I've read on another forum state this plays fine in the USA, it's Warner and they don't region code.

PAL and NTSC are Standard Definition formats not HD formats

Cool

With purchasing movies overseas, are the audio tracks going to be in English? I understand the region free codes, but I've never tried to purchase overseas. Somebody enlighten me

Depends on the movie and where you order it from. If you get it out of the UK it's most likely going to have an english track.

If you order it from Japan you'll want to check the specs and make sure there's an english track on it.

Simply put though it shouldn't be much of a problem, most places will list the audio tracks and subtitles on the product discription page.

HD resolutions though still have differing frame rates I think.

PAL
720p@50hz, 1080i@50hz, 1080p@50hz

NTSC
720p@60hz, 1080i@60hz, 1080p@60hz

I dunno though as to how the 10-frame difference would affect the playback.

Blackraven you're mistaken about naming it "PAL" or "NTSC"

720 and 1080 are not PAL or NTSC resolutions, so they aren't NOT PAL or NTSC.

PAL is 625 line 576 active pixels and NTSC is 525 line 486 active pixels.

A refresh rate is not what makes it "PAL" or "NTSC" (there's a PAL 60 too)
And there's the color encoding.

Movies on BD should be in 24p

Unless it's the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour

TV Live shows and other stuff could be in 50Hz or 60Hz depending on point of origination on region B discs but for region A discs the 50Hz material would be converted into a 60Hz compatible rate unless somebody confirms for sure the Region A players transcode 50 to 60 on the fly for US 60Hz-only displays. See for example the Region A BBC's Planet Earth. It's in 24p

If a theatrical movie on BD is in a 50Hz rate, it would be from a speeded up for EuropeanTV master

I see.

But what about playing 60hz Blu-ray discs on European players? (like playing WB Region-free BDs on PAL PS3s)

Will it convert the 60hz material into 50hz (internal processing)?

The Island was visually stunning on DVD so I am sure BD is going to be off the hook!
