Blu-ray has spoiled me to the point where I usually pass on a flick if I can't see it on Our Favorite Format. This only occurs when I'm by myself, however. I don't make a fuss when I'm at another person's house.
![]() One unfortunate side effect is that I'll rarely check out something I've never seen, even if it's critically acclaimed or a classic, if I can only view it on DVD. However, I don't mind watching TV shows on DVD/streaming, although ideally it'd be nice to see them on Blu-ray as well. Does anyone else have this problem? (I guess you could call it a problem.) |

I would call it a problem. People didn't have an issue with DVD before Blu-ray came along and suddenly watching a DVD is like having your eyes cut with razor blades. Did you know DVD was the format of choice for Hitler and was responsible for the atrocities of WWII

I'll only refuse to watch a DVD if its something that is available on blu ray.
A few favorite films of mine are only on DVD right now, like Roman Holiday and Open Your Eyes. Since I need at least an annual fix of those i have no choice but to watch dvd. It doesnt feel wrong becusee thats the best that is available. Also sometimes I get sick of waiting around for a BD release to watch something that i just break down and buy the DVD since i don't stream and its the obly way to legally watch it. Mostly if theres no release date in sight and the chances of release look doubtful. |

Only two of my faves are not available on BD; that's Zelig and The King Of Comedy, so I have them on DVD. I have a handful of others; but only because I haven't gotten round to getting the Blu-ray versions yet.
I also refuse to watch anything on ITV here in the UK cause they open matte everything to 1.78:1!! I'll watch something on DVD if it's a comedy or drama with little visual flair and others are sitting down to watch it, but in terms of purchases I always get Blu-ray; and not just any Blu-ray, the best version of that Blu-ray in respects to video transfer, audio mix and their subsequent encodes; cut/s of the movie, packaging and extras. I wouldn't say I outright refuse to watch much, but I much, much prefer to view content as its creators intended and true to the source; and using the highest quality technical presentation as a vehicle to do so faithfully. Same here. There are far too many great films not yet available on Blu. The last several films I've watched have been on DVD, including Pelle the Conqueror, High Sierra, Ballad of a Soldier, and Touch of Evil.

I still buy many DVDs, since there's plenty of movies I want that only available on dvd and won't be upgraded to bd. There are plenty of indie companies that cannot afford to take a chance with bds or that the materials available to them aren't up to snuff for HD, unfortunately. I probably bought at least thirty dvds last year, and will continue to do so when there isn't a bd option.

Although I certainly prefer Blu-ray whenever possible, it's really the movies in scope that I can barely stand to watch on DVD any more, since they suffer the most when blown up to 10 feet wide, even if they're anamorphic transfers. The 16x9 anamorphic DVDs that are 1.78 or 1.85 I'll sometimes watch, but even those stretch the available resolution to all that it can bear on a large screen.
On the other hand, the pre-widescreen classics in 4x3 that were carefully mastered in HD within the past 5-10 years usually look extremely good on DVD when upscaled at 1080p, since you're getting the maximum available pixels used most efficiently in the smallest area. The best ones actually look better than some of the over-DNR'd Blu-rays out there, but a good Blu-ray properly transferred and authored will still blow those DVDs away. So, yeah, I often avoid or put off watching movies simply because they're not available on Blu-ray. |

It obvious he has done two illegal things. One, its against the law to defeat any type of copy protection.
Or two, if a person some how feels they can copy what they own and have a backup, he admitted to selling the original and keeping the copy, which is illegal. |

I watch and still buy some dvds, ones that I feel won't hit blu or won't hit blu for some time to come. Every so often I will upgrade a dvd to it's blu ray counterpart, but am not in any big hurry to do so. If a movie is on both, I of course, will spend the extra for the blu.
I sometimes don't like watching regular television because of the horrible picture qualty. Not on all regular non hi def channels, only some, and it is more pronounced when they show an old sitcom like say All In The Famly that was shot on videotape to begin with. |
