Default Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Switching Aspect Ratio Poll

I decided to create this poll to see how many of you out there would actually WANT a blu-ray of MI:GP with shifting aspect ratios to include the full sized IMAX scenes in all their hi-def captured glory, (to join the likes of The Dark Knight, Transformers 2, or Tron: Legacy) or how many of you couldn't be bothered with the so-called "gimmick" and/or have home theatre systems that make viewing switching ARs a pain the behind.

I was all upset when I learned the sad news MI:GP will NOT feature the switching ARs, and that the amazing Brad Bird has decided to cut out areas of the picture, as if to say he made some huge mistake filming in IMAX in the first place.

I see it as an equivalent to cropping a widescreen picture to full frame like they used to back in the VHS days. I would like the entire picture intact as it was meant to be, as it was filmed. Not a chopped up image just so it's convenient for the 0.2% of homeowners out there who have projector displays.

But what say you? I figure numbers can speak volumes, so hopefully Paramount or someone with some pull will be able to see our cries for an IMAX version.

UPDATE! A recent Twitter convo Brad Bird had with regards to the issue

It's no "gimmick" for me. It's how the movie is meant to be seen(albeit with the IMAX scenes in 1.78:1 at home instead of 4:3).

There's no in-between option for those of us who don't care about the shifting AR, but care enough about the argument to cast a vote.

RJ, that would be the 2nd option then. By giving the consumer a choice of which version to buy like they did for Transformers 2. You could go out and buy the standard release, or the limited edition IMAX release.

Thanks!

Fair enough, but I don't even think that's necessary. Guess there's no harm in that though.

Thank you slim, we are aware however.

Hence the reason for this poll. To show that there is enough interest out there with the public to hopefully get the studio's attention to release an IMAX version of the film in the (near) future.

I would like the option to watch it either way but dont like 2 releases.

They should both be on the same disc by using a branching option to select the version to watch.

I'm gutted that we won't be getting the IMAX version on Blu, IMO it works terrifically well in the home.

Given the insane amount of store exclusives that get released these days, providing 2 different versions would've been no great hardship.

I don't think it's that big of an issue.

It's more like cropping a cinerama film for video. It's because the cinerama version was made for a very specific size and a very specific shape, just like with the IMAX scenes in MI4.

That said, I'd gladly buy an optional IMAX release, but the current Blu-ray version is actually more accurate to how MOST people saw the film in theaters.

Agreed. Call me crazy, but maybe a 2 disc version - one with the standard 2.35.1 and one with switching ratios...?

I think it worked well with The Dark Knight. I'd be in for it with MI:GP.

I would have said "no" before seeing the Dark Knight blu-ray, under the deluded notion that it would somehow be distracting to have the film switch ratios back and forth.

However, have watched TDK on blu, the ratio switching isn't a distraction at all - even when it only lasts a shot or two. And the extra detail in the IMAX scenes is very noticeable. I'm all for it!

I think something along the lines of the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen release would be ideal. I want shifting ratios, but if I had a constant height setup or simply disliked the shifting ratios, I would be bothered by it, so a compromise to keep both happy is my preference. If it came down to choosing a single option, though, I would pick shifting ratios, to preserve the film as it was shown originally in IMAX theaters.

Good poll. I want shifting aspect ratios, but if the Brad insists against it I'll have to buy it anyway. Just too bad.
