Japan Okami HD - One of the finest 1080p HD Remasters

I'm only making this thread because i did a search and didn't see any existing thread, but mainly because Shin-Ra mentioned that it ran in 1080p with some 4xMSAA (hope that's right lol).

That would certainly mean it's a gorgeous looking game and i've heard nothing but good things having unfortunately never ever getting round to play this amongst quite a few other PS2 gems

So i was just wondering if anybody knew whether this had a UK release or was it Japan specific?

well I know it's in the US as well, I have it, if that helps.

I did play it on PS2 and it is one of my all time favorite games, it is in my list of games to play on PS3, I will get to it this year hopefully.

I hope you are able to get it, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

I had a look and the PS2 version is easily available for cheap but the HD PS3 version is listed at £79.99 on Amazon.

Can't afford that so i'm not sure whether it actually had a UK release or was extremely limited and sold out

Pretty sure it's up for download on PSN. I got it last month for $10 (here in the US). Japan was the only region to get it on a physical disc.

Blu-ray release is Japan/Asia only, region-free with English text included I believe. This seems to confirm it:

http://www.capcom-europe.com/forum/s....php?p=1136842

It's out pretty much everywhere on PSN. And yes, full 1920x1080 resolution with 4xMSAA and 16xAF. Super clean and crisp! Rejuvenation cutscenes that were prerendered FMV on PS2 are instead realtime rendered with the same image quality as gameplay. 30fps with fixed-position tearing at the top of the image, rare slowdown, most toward the end of the game and at the start of battle.

Blog post by HexaDrive detailing their remastering process [English machine-translation] [Cut-down Capcom USA Blog article]

Some other interesting details:
  • If you force 720p, anti-aliasing is increased to something like 8xMSAA and tearing is greatly reduced
  • Menus and gameplay HUD has been redrawn for native 1080p display
  • There's an option to switch the paper-filter to Light/Standard/Heavy
  • Super-resolution technology applied to clean up and sharpen textures:

This is just showing how clean IQ is afar and close up:

Thanks a lot for all the info Shin-ra. I'll definitely be having a look for it on the PSN and buy it if it's at a good price

Definitely seems like the definitive version to get for PS3. I still have a PS2 but i wouldn't really want to play that version with the HD update being so delicious

Still, shame they didn't do a retail release. I love having my games on disk

The game is amazing! If I had never known that this was a PS2 title I would have thought it was a true current gen title.

I never actually finished this back in the PS2 days so I made sure to get the platinum for it on PS3.

Okami HD is a shining example of gorgeous HD remastering. Some truly amazing work here, and on top of an already amazing game.

I do wish the screen tear would go away. I'd give up some of that MSAA for it, as screen tear is way worse than a bit of jaggedness when rendering at 1080p. :/

Well, I can't help but think more middle-tier developers (especially from Japan) could have stood out by targeting highly polished 1080p graphics with simpler, unique art styles and open action-adventure/RPG structures. Only some textures give away its PS2 roots, the low poly models work with the style.

Okami HD's performed strongly in the PSN charts:

(game released October 30th SCEA, 31st SCEE)

October:
SCEA 16th (Top 20 PSN and PS3 Full Games)
November:
SCEE 1st (PSN games) 2nd if combined with "Full Game" chart - see comments
SCEA 4th (Top 20 PSN and PS3 Full Games)
December:
SCEE 7th (PSN games)
SCEA 13th (Top 20 PSN and PS3 Full Games)
January:
SCEE 7th (PSN games)

No February charts yet.

These results despite the $19.99/£15.99/€19.99 price.

It also sold close to 70,000 copies in its 1st week in Japan for its physical copy of the game.

Yeah me neither. Aside from some low rez textures, I really have no problem with the graphics at all.

I thought it was fantastic looking. I'm sort of happy I never got around to it until now.

And yet I had to import the retail version. Well, at least I'll know that I properly own the game.
