I was under the impression that all the forthcoming players would be ready/could be ready to handle whatever codecs the discs are mastered in...

Blu-ray specifications require that all players produced, from day 1 can do the following:

Play single and double layer discs (BD25/BD50)

Be able to decode video for the following CODECS:
MPEG2, VC-1, AVC

So, you will not have any problems with any of the video for any player you buy... ever.

That's what I thought I remembered.

Now someone explain to me what the deal is on this supposed proprietary codec that Panasonic will include on its player?...

AFAIK, Panasonic is creating its own version of h.264 (aka AVC) that is meant to be more efficient (i.e. better picture with less artifacts) than the current one. Who knows if it will work, or if it will end up being considered a separate codec.
