Default "Weird Science" Remake

Quote:
n 1985, John Hughes' Weird Science, his third movie as a director, was a huge stepping stone in the launch of the '80s Brat Pack with Anthony Michael Hall following his appearances in Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, as he was joined by Ilan Mitchell-Smith and a fresh-faced 20-year-old youngster named Robert Downey Jr. It was the seventh film produced by the slightly older 33-year-old Joel Silver.

The high concept premise involved two nerdy high school students who are inspired by the movie Frankenstein to create the perfect woman with superpowers using their computer to make the school jocks and bullies jealous. In 1994, the movie's concept was relaunched as a television show by the fledgling USA cable network. Kelly LeBrock played the perfect woman in the original movie, a role taken over by Vanessa Angel on TV.

Now word comes from Deadline that Universal and Joel Silver's Silver Pictures want to relaunch the comedy as a movie with Michael Bacall (Project X, 21 Jump Street and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) writing the script.

According to the story, the film will try to create an edgier R-rated version of the concept with the help of Bacall who had success relaunching the popular '80s television show 21 Jump Street in a similar way.

The movie will be produced by Joel Silver's Silver Pictures with Andrew Rona and executive producer Alex Heineman with Universal's Scott Bernstein overseeing the project.

The original theme song for the 1985 movie was composed and performed by a band called Oingo Boingo whose frontman Danny Elfman has gone on to become one of the most successful film composers of the past two and a half decades. It's probably a bit too early for this kind of suggestion, but we want to put it out there that Toronto's Metric (who provided music for Scott Pilgrim) should be asked to rework the theme song for the remake.

Couldn't disagree with you more! And here's why:

First of all, the fact that they want to make it a hard R-rated film, is very intriguing since remakes usually go the opposite and water it down.

Second, most of the time when a popular film gets a remake, that usually will signal the re-release of the original on blu-ray.

Why does a fun and campy classic film like this have to have a hard R rating? Does their need to be torture scenes in it? Something shocking? Gimme a break.

The original is a LOVED classic. Fock this idea. I hope all those that partake in it get a flesh eating virus on their junk.

I will agree with you that the original coming out on blu-ray might be a by product of this. That would be great. However, be forewarned that Twilight might get the release which means only 3,000 copies will be made available and they will be horrificly overpriced. Efff that idea too.

Man, this thread just ruined an otherwise great day thus far!

Dude slow your roll, I don't think we are on the same page here. You do realize a "hard R" in a comedy usually means more adult themed humor right?

Also, to answer your other issue about Twilight Time, I would GLADLY pay $35 for this on blu-ray!

The original is a product of its time. The fact that they want to somehow recreate that, is mind boggling and stupid IMO.

They're remaking everything these days and it's just ridiculous.

Nah I know - I was being sarcastic sort of. But, boobies & adult themes arent going to make the film better. Its great as it is, at least most prolly think so. I just dont see what it could add. Its about young people so no need for wittty adult themed humor or sexual innuendos one after another.

Even all that aside..... who really thinks this needs a remake anyways????

I know how you feel, keep in mind I'm one of the people who doesn't have a problem with ANY film getting a re-make for a modern/new audience to experience.

What's next, a remake of The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes? These copious of reboots, and remakes is getting pathetic.

I am against this.

At least they aren't Remaking Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles or Pretty in Pink.

I will agree with you that nudity/adult material doesn't necessarily make it a better film, but I'm just glad they wouldn't make it more family friendly like most "teen" films these days.

Of all films, I just don't understand why anyone would want to remake Weird Science.

Yeah, ditto on that.

But, I just HATE when a film is remade that has nothing really wrong with it and already has a solid fan base that loves it just how it is. Superman comes to mind - and I like Zack Snyder. That was another head scratcher.

Well I was beginning to see your side of it until you mentioned Superman, you lost me on that one bro. The remake looks AMAZING!

Cant do it - the original films are considered classics(1 & 2 anyways) that were cast and acted perfectly, directed almost perfectly, and have a lot of fans. They were fun movies. The problem I have with the remake or reboot is that instead of a fun Superman film they just HAD to go all "Dark Knight" on everyone and make it mopey, miserable, and dark. No freegin thanks.

Doesnt matter what I think. People will see it and thats fine. I just have zero interest. The Reeve films are Superman to me and always will be.

I hear ya, and respect how you feel. I happen to Love everything that Christopher Nolan is associated with, so I guess I'm their target audience for it.

dumb idea. back then, people didn't know enough about computers to think something like this couldn't happen. conputers could do anything. now, we know better. that are they going to do, create her using thier ipad? and making it R rated doesn't mean it will be good. lots of crappy R Rated comedies out there already. i say leave this one alone.

As long as it's good, I'll be fine with it. I could say Joss Whedon should write the remake but he already did as an episode of Buffy.

You know I used to be like some of you die hards that voice my digust at remakes but considering it's been a pretty common thing the last 10 years or so I gave up that rant. I changed my way of thinking that in some cases as with this one we might get a better release of the original (and now especially on Blu-ray).

Considering all the DVD releases of this are messed up(Music on first release, and missing audio on the others) In this case I'm very happy for a remake to have another chance to fix the originals problems.
