BBC Earth have produced a new IMAX documentary on Antarctica. It’s the same team behind Planet Earth 2 so promises to be spectacular.

It was showing in 3d at the Science Museum before the latest shutdown.

I managed to catch this. It starts with the 2d BBC Earth logo for whatever reason but then switches into proper 3d. It suffers like all the Arctic docs in that featureless white expanses aren’t the best for stereoscopy but they manage to vary the locations a surprising amount.

The underwater shots are best as usual check out the brinicles (sp). The surface ice pack and ocean floor give great depth cues. There is another great shoot around an abandoned whaling station that contrasts the dimensionality of the architecture against a vivid star field. Anyone watching it though is probably only going to remember the incontinent penguins which the filmmakers take great joy in lingering on.

It’s advertised as being by the Planet Earth team but the picture quality didn’t seem to be of that calibre, especially the aerial shots.

Worth making an effort to see if in town, the BBC is likely done with 3d blu ray at this point.The science museum ticketing system spits you out at the front wing by default, make sure to ask for a back row centre seat. It should improve.
