France The Night Porter (Liliana Cavani)

Quote:
French distributors Wild Side Video have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray Liliana Cavani's controversial Il portiere di notte a.k.a The Night Porter (1974), starring Dirk Bogarde (Luchino Visconti's Death in Venice), Charlotte Rampling (Francois Ozon's Under the Sand), and Philippe Leroy (Jacques Becker's Le Trou). Street date is October 25th.

In the U.S., currently The Night Porter is available only on SDVD via the Criterion Collection.

It always seemed to me that Criterion under-appreciated this film: It's Spine #59 and it is in pretty desperate need of a new release as Criterion's disc is largely lacking in the usual areas. I may pick up this BD if no Criterion announcement is made, since Wild Side have said that English audio will be on the disc.

I suppose one could pray for some English-language extras, but with Rampling being fluent in French, Cavani being Italian and Borgarde no longer with us anyway, that seems like a pipe dream.

It's going to be restored right? DVD looks awful. Not sure this is a good film or not, but it always seems to survive my DVD downsizing cull.

The film was screened at Cannes not too long ago. However, I don't know yet what source will be used for this Blu-ray release.

Now...how to explain THAT cover to anyone who sees it?

First the UK Emmanuelle, now this. I hope there is a reversible cover option, I don't mind it myself, but if the trend continues, people over here are going to think I have a porn collection on BD, and in this day and age, that's simply not true...

...since I have a computer.

I don't believe it needs any explaining The cover borrows the original Italian poster art.

On the other hand, I don't believe people that need explaining would be interested in the film to begin with. Mature viewers, however, will certainly understand and appreciate it.

I hope a UK distributors ports this release. It would be even better if Criterion also upgraded their SDVD release as it is one of their worst.

You haven't moved out of your parents house?
Or all your friends are prude?
You have something else to hide that's why you're feeling generally guilty?

No, it doesn't really matter. If I import this it will be far from the least explicit mainstream title I own anyway--even on BD.

That cover is just disgusting and this pornographic film should be removed from the blu-ray.com database. I'm just so disappointed - i thought that blu-ray.com stood for Christain family values?
