Im interested in getting both Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD and DAY OF THE DEAD. Can anyone tell me the best version between the UK Arrow releases and the US Anchor Bay (Starz) ones?

The American Blu-ray of Day of the Dead has the best picture quality, but not most extra features. It still have DNR, but less than the UK BD. Both 5.1-tracks have dialog overdubbed by different actors and brief alterations to language. Mono track is untouched.
The UK Blu-ray from Arrow Video have much more extra features, but a bit poorer colours and picture quality since they have used more DNR, The picture is also stretched. |

I have it, but i wouldn`t say it`s anywhere near pristine quality, due to too much use of DNR.

Thanks folks..... I'm set about DAWN now but still a bit unsure about DAY.
i guess it seems to be personal taste in terms of the picture quality. |

Regarding Day: The image of US seem to be a bit better. The Audio of both is imperfect. But AFAIK the US Audio is not just buggy, but censored. The UK is not censored, but also buggy (muffled gunshot, wrong voice pitch ..) |

From what I can tell, the UK Blu for Dawn looks slightly better and the US Blu for Day looks slightly better. The differences are minor enough that I'd recommend going for whichever releases are superior in other departments.

Does anybody know what the framerates and aspect ratios are for the various blu-ray releases of Day of the Dead? I read somewhere that the French blu-ray was 24.000fps, not 23.976. Does anybody know? How about the Arrow UK version?

Thanks for the info. Confusing - regarding aspect ratios - the NSM Records and Anchor Bay versions appear to have the same exact aspect ratios, while the Arrow and French versions have a different aspect ratio. Either the NSM Records and Anchor Bay versions are being squashed in vertically, or the Arrow and French versions are being stretched vertically - I can't tell which. The French and Arrow versions are 16:9, while the NSM Records and Anchor Bay versions are 1:85:1. Which is right? Some comments seem to say the US is squashed, others say Arrow is stretched. I thought the original aspect ratio is 1:85:1? Neither transfer has any additional information on either the sides or top/bottom - it's just stretched or squished vertically, whichever way is wrong.
Interestingly the French blu-ray is 24.000fps, not 23.976. Odd. Last edited by mar3o; 06-09-2013 at 06:42 AM. |
