Was waiting for this one. Will probably pre-order it soon.

Surprised they didn't release Retaliation at the same time, or even as a double-bill, but now I'm guessing we'll get that in May.

well im not so sure about the price yet.. with the increase in price they had recently there is not much i would like to pick up to get free shipping.
and 18.99 GBP for a Yakuza B-Movie seems a bit much.

its a bit hard to shallow that price. even if the movie seems like something i would absolutly enjoy.

its not really a fine move to make such releases store exclusiv and call it limited edition of 3000 UK (+3000 US). now they seem to target the "collectors" that just have to get everything a label releases.

Mansinthe, you could try just waiting for it to be in one of their sales. I doubt the 3000 will sell out before the end of the year on this particular title.

That said, I might pre-order it myself - it would only be £12.10 for me after using 390 of my rewards points. And I'd also get rewards points back (121 if I use my rewards points or 160 if I don't). If you really want to get this sooner rather than later, buy it with some other stuff to qualify for free shipping maybe? Or look at it as £17.39 as you'll get 160 points back anyway...

It's a relatively obscure film and, as far as I'm aware, it has never been released on home video with English subtitles (correct me if I'm wrong)? I certainly don't have a problem paying £16 for it. It's the kind of obscurity I don't mind the 'Twilight Time model' being used for (though I don't really want to dredge up that debate again!) as it seems a lot easier to justify than putting down £30 for each and every Woody Allen film.

yeah after watching the trailer several times (and i love nikkatsu noir / yakuza movies)... ive ordered it.

thanks for reminding me about the rewardpoints @ rapta. i had 1204 points left and got the movie for 6,95 GBP (because of the +3 GBP for shipping) .

wouldnt have used the points anyway for a long time.

I agree with you on all points but let me just say - this is a film you absolutely going to enjoy!

I don't think it's really the "Twilight Time" model, it's more the "this obscure film won't sell many copies anyway" model. If limited runs mean Arrow will take a chance on films like this, then I'll totally support it.

Ignoring their mainstream horror titles I haven't heard of most of the stuff Twilight Time put out. I think both know they're obscure titles so they drum up sales by using the "limited 3000" model.

In this case I like obscure Japanese cult films so works for me.

So this is limited to 3,000 copies worldwide (combined ArrowVideo and ArrowVideo USA total)? I wonder if they'll be supplying the exact same stock to both territories, and it could be a reason why it's Arrow Store exclusive in the UK? Just sticking a UK BBFC certificate sticker on the cellophane for UK orders?

I think I better get my order in if it is limited to 3,000 worldwide.

I believe it's just the UK edition which is limited to 3000 copies. Or at least both territories will receive 3000 copies each.

3000 per territory. So that's 3000 general release copies for America, going to Amazon and stuff, and then another 3000 only for the Arrow Store. Different pressings.

Regardless of the US title, it'll take quite a long time to sell all 3,000, so I wouldn't worry. I still think they have quite a bit of copies of their amazing Stray Cat Rock set, which this director worked on some of those films as well. Can't wait for this one. Big fan of his first film, Black Tight Killers. Absolutely essential for fans of 60s and 70s Japanese genre films!

Stray Cat Rock has sold out from the Arrow store.

It really sucks how a few companies now are doing these 'Limited Editions' runs. Just keep it in print! If stock starts to go down, just print some more?!

Sure, print 3000 to start, but don't say it's a limited edition.

It's about consumer perception. I think it was Eureka who explained at the time of their Mizoguchi box set that titles that were slow sellers for years would suddenly pick up if they were announced as going OOP - i.e. If there was a sense that supply would soon dry up. So while a title like Massacre Gun probably wouldn't sell 3000 copies ordinarily, explicitly limiting it means that consumers will buy it sooner than they would have otherwise. So any investment is recouped more quickly.

Who knows, maybe it also reduces the cost of licensing the film in the first place?

As soon as something non-mainstream comes out it gets preorderd by die hard fans and goes on everybody elses wishlist for the future/sale/whenever. By saying its limited there's less incentive for people to wait about and therefore more sales for the label.

There's no way in hell Fright Night had been a big seller if Sony had just dumped it out there, it'd been another Night of the Creeps. But stick limited on it and it shifts sales like no business.
