India/Bollywood Portrayal Of Men & Women In Indian Cinema

I recently made a thread like this in the Hollywood & Celebrities section but I think we have a different problem here in India.

I saw Ranjhanna and was really uncomfortable watching Dhanush's character stalk that poor girl. Men are portrayed as stalkers and women are shown to fall in 'love' after said harassment, bordering on physical abuse. Also, let's not forget how in many movies, they are shown as sex objects. Let me say that these days it is happening with men also what with all the shirtless scenes in Student Of The Year.

Filmmakers and audiences should realise that stalking is NOT love! Even if subconciously, these movies instil immoral behaviour.

The following is a little off the topic, but if this movie is realistic, then I want to scream - WTF IS HAPPENING TO THIS COUNTRY?????!!!

The portrayal of men, women, and relationships are always a bit exagerated in movies but not as ridiculous as in Indian movies, which is mainly due to:

1. the ratio of good to bad movies: Good filmmakers tend to have better writers, which is why you'll see more realistically-written "men, women, relationship" scenarios in art-house/indie films from other countries, even in mainstream ones too. India has some good filmmakers but the number is a massive minority, which is why there are about less than 10 decent to good films in India per year compared to ones in Hollywood. Thus, the Indian theaters are constantly flooded with the same old stalker romance weekend after weekend.

2. masala filmmaking traditions: it's hard to stop the stalking romance scenario when most Indian filmmakers are afraid to stray from traditions.

Very well said. I also want to add that sadly people like to see and enjoy such crap cinema. When they don't see things like this they didn't feel there moneys worth. Like toddly said that there are very few mature film makers out there and by the way how many people go out to see some art house film? I use to watch many movies but now I have restricted myself and I only watch selected bollywood movies now because of the cheap toilet humor and the things you mentioned in your post, and talk about 'Student of the year', there is no way I will watch a movie like this even if someone pays me!
