Default Movie ratio good for blu ray

Movie should all be 1.85:1, so blu ray can be full screen like avatar did. 2.35:1 is not good on blu ray.

Incorrect.

Not to mention, 1:85:1 is NOT full screen on an HDTV, anyway.

And AVATAR's director-preferred OAR is 1.78:1.

WOW! what an enlightenment
But: you are wrong.
The best fitting Aspect Ratio is 1,78:1.
1920*1080 is Full HD if you divide the width by the height, then:
1920/1080 = 1.77777777777777777777(endless 7) rounded up to: 1.78

While if you multiply 1.85 with 1080, then the result is 1998, thats a bigger with then BD, so with a width of 1980 and AR of 1.85:1 you have a smaller image heigh of about 10 pixels. So the Full HD is not perfectly used.

But If a movie is OAR 2.35:1 and a 1.85:1 would be a cropped Version, I prefer OAR without cropping.

For accuracy, it's 1.78:1 for full screen. I mean full screen without crop. Nobody want a crop one.

Another one of these thread, really? Look this is the 21st century, we finaly have TV that let's us enjoy the proper way how movies were filmed by director with a format (Blu-ray) that restor some of the glory of watching them in theaters. If you are so desperate to fill out your precious TV screen, use the zoom button and stop creating these silly threads.

It's totally foolish to zoom picture and crop it.

Yet you want every director to compromise their preferred vision by only using 1.85:1.

What about the 2.39:1 movies shot on anamorphic lens? It will have to be cropped to fill in your 1.78:1 screen.

If you want to be really accurate it's 16.9, which is a bit under 1.78. I suppose the question is for new films, older films being, er...what they are. I love the 2.35 shape, looking the the telly in a dark room the 'scope shape always looks bigger than the full 16.9 frame.

Aspect Ratio is appropriate to screen composition. If a director wants a wide environment shot to set the atmosphere then going with 2.35 is better, if you want a character duel then 1.85 allows two or more face offs in a composition, if you want to watch porn then you have a very narrow focus of interest and full frame works best. At least my take on it.

Sounds like you need a bigger screen.
