I enjoyed Kill la Kill but I grew tired of it. Better than decent story line and it brings a classic style of anime and action back to current day. It was enjoyable enough. I may have to revisit it.
From what I read Log Horizon seems good. I'll see if I can get into it this wkend! |

And I see we're getting the half of anime fans that didn't watch Outbreak Company or NouCome.
(Tried watching half an episode of Log Horizon, but felt like it was taking the cool seriousness of Sword Art Online, and turning it into a game-ready One Piece.) |

I liked Outbreak Company a great deal, though its overall arc meandered and drifted along aimlessly. One I haven't seen mentioned too much in these types of discussion is Beyond the Boundary. One of those anime that was quite well-rounded, from its engaging characters to humor, action and drama. |

I watch the first 5 episodes of beyond the boundary but idk I couldn't get into it . So I stopped watching but I saw sentai filmworks licensed it. I'll give it another shot when that comes out. Maybe I'll enjoy it more if it has an English dub(less reading) but we'll see. I liked the characters though. |

Also, it's surprisingly pro-geek for a Japanese comedy (that usually marginalizes or snubs the image of anime/manga fanboys), as if it wanted to be the series that stands up in defense of Fan Culture. |

If anything, Outbreak Company had too little fan service given its mix of characters. They could have upped the laughs in the second half using some fan service.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Kokoro Connect, though I don't know if that qualifies as a 2013 series. |

Counting series that finished airing in 2013 and that I completed:
1. Blast of Tempest. BONES were the perfect choice for this one. Shakespearean and gloriously theatrical, with one of the best soundtracks of the year. 2. Flowers of Evil. An incredible artistic achievement, and such a breath of fresh air. Naysayers be damned, it captures the mood of the manga perfectly! 3. My Teen Romcom SNAFU. This one sneaked up on me, but I found myself looking forward to it more and more every week. The show completely clicked for me in episode 5. It's a really intelligent and insightful look at friendship. 4. Watamote. Simultaneously the most heartbreaking and yet the most hilarious series of 2013. Shin Oonuma's direction is perfect for the material, and Izuma Kitta's performance as Tomoko is my favourite of the year. 5. Silver Spoon. A wonderful adaptation of a brilliant manga. Fullmetal Alchemist is my all time favourite title, and Silver Spoon continues to show why Hiromu Arakawa is such a brilliant mangaka. Honourable mentions: Majestic Prince (consistently good, with a wonderful cast), Gargantia (AMAZING start...that ground to a halt with episode 5, though it recovered), Haganai NEXT (had some really surprising and intelligent story development). Even though I like it a lot, I stalled on watching Attack on Titan once it hit the recap episode. I plan to finish it off once the BD and the dub come out. As for movies that I saw this year: 1. Patema Inverted. I cannot praise this film enough. A wonderful and touching fantasy, with a great pair of lead characters and some gorgeous animation. Great music too, from Michiru Oshima (who also did Blast of Tempest...and the original Fullmetal Alchemist). Can't wait to get both this and the Time of Eve BD from the Kickstarter! 2. Wolf Children. Mamoru Hosoda just goes from strength to strength. A beautiful and bittersweet experience. 3. The Garden of Words. It's Makoto Shinkai at his very best. I really bought the lead relationship and the animation was incredible. 4. The Princess and the Pilot. A lovely and charming film that was a joy to watch. A simple, well told story. Also a special mention to NIS America for their excellent premium edition. This was my first time buying one of their releases, and the book in particular was very informative. I regret not importing their AnoHana premium edition now. Looking forward to Toaru Hikūshi e no Koiuta next season! 5. Evangelion 3.33. This movie is going to be understandably divisive. I thought it certainly had some issues, but otherwise it was a bold and brilliant continuation of the Rebuild movies. I love how it actually made me reevaluate my reaction to 2.22. Plus more anime should be presented at 2.35:1, it looked great! Last edited by Ath; 12-28-2013 at 12:20 AM. |

I have to go with 6, because I couldn't figure out which one I wanted to leave off the list, and felt they all deserved mentions:
(In no particular order): Hataraku Maō-sama (The Devil Is a Part-Timer): Completely wacky/absurd concept, surprisingly turned out a good cast of characters and a show that was way much more fun than it had any right to be. Noucome (My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy): Again, super wacky, and delivered surprisingly good emotion from unexpected places. Uchōten Kazoku (The Eccentric Family): Incredibly beautiful art, a pleasure to stare at. A shaky/unsure story at the start that in the end led to something bittersweet and heartwarming. Kyōkai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary): Top notch art from a team that usually works on drama (from my own experiences), delivered great action, insanely cool monster designs, wonderful characters, and... everything... awesome. Servant x Service: I didn't even realize it was from the same author of my beloved 'Woking!' at first. But once I did, I fell in love hard. I may have even been fine with the everyday slice-of-life nonsense alone. But add a love story in there? And a completely adorable one to boot? You got me hook, line, and sinker. Kotoura-san" Woah, where the F did THAT emotion come from?!?! Totally unexpected. |
