Default Hall of Shame... Nominations for the WORST menu on BD

Earth: Power of the Planet (UK)

Hiya,

I've got the BBC Title : Earth: Power of the Planet (UK). This is my nomination for title with the worst menu system imaginable. The menu is slow, totally without any artistic merit whatsoever, and treats the viewer like a complete moron... with an annoying voice telling you that you have four options.

If you wish to be totally pi$$ed off with a Blu-ray... buy this at once... you won't be disappointed. In many ways it really spoils what could otherwise be an excellent title... just getting it to play however makes your teeth grind!!!

I'd have to say any release that doesn't have one to speak of and skips right to the movie, such as Interview With A Vampire (the release itself sucked too, poor PQ and no lossless audio).

You must be speaking of Warner titles. I actually love that they skip the menu on their discs.

Casino is the worst I've experienced. Universal didn't even bother to use music from the movie. It sounds like I'm watching an infomercial. And the scenes from the film loop in a small window in a menu, surrounded by metallic graphics that have a futuristic look (nothing at all to do with the Casino theme). How hard would it have been to develop a Vegas- or gambling-themed menu.

I think I recall Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid has some of the hardest to distinguish menus. Sony has been bad at this as well, whats so hard with using light colors on dark backgrounds or dark colors on light backgrounds.

I REALLY dislike this. It doesn't seem blu.
That's one of the reasons why i hate buying their blu-rays.

Anyways, worse menus ...

Speed Racer, and all the WARNER titles basically.

Really? I find it annoying that it does that. And their early releases (which are also the ones who skip right into the film) always use lossy audio instead of lossless! I have to go in and choose the lossless audio.

I remember wanting to rip Fantasia out of the player and stomp on it the first time I tried to play it.

the worst menu that comes to mind would be sister street fighter and I just watched the extras on 40 year old virgin last night and having to go thru them all and going back and forth the menu seemed clunky then again it was probally the annoying noise when u click a button

Any Fox disc where you can't get out of the damn supplements when they're playing without forward skipping - sometimes over multiple chapter stops for longer supplements.

And Ironically, Fox boast that they have "Smart Menu" technology. Its not that smart when you can't bring it up (or exit to a main menu) when viewing anything other than the movie!

I dislike the Disney menus lately because they take up most of the screen. Its not a deal-breaker but it is a little annoying.

I don't like that WB titles don't have a main menu and so I'm scrambling to bring up a pop-up menu to change the audio before the movie starts. If they'd default to lossless audio, I wouldn't have much of a problem with that although I guess I'd still prefer to have a main menu.

I'm not particularly fond of Universal's generic menus but at least they're easy to navigate.

I don't remember the specific titles now but there are some where I'm sure if I have the option highlighted or not so I end up having to try things to see what gets selected to figure it out. There are also a few where it wasn't clear how to get out of an option once I had its menu open.

Ideally, I'd like a really nice looking / advanced menu that is easy to navigate. But, I'd take a generic easy to navigate menu (like Universal's) over a nice looking one where I'm not sure what to do or where I'm not sure what is selected and what's not.
