Default Broadcast commercials

I apologize if this shouldn't be here but I couldn't really decide where to put it.

So if you didn't see in another thread I just got a new teevee Pioneer Elite PRO150FD. I really like the fact that it auto zooms the images when its not 16x9 content, but i think it looks ridiculously horrible, I almost want to turn my head Its not really a big deal with a DVR though, but my question is

Do you think in 2009 that broadcast commercials will keep the same 4:3 content, or do you think they will switch to 16:9 for everything...beyond that do you think we will start to see high definition commercials at this time as well?

Dreaming of a non SD world

Nothing will change.

I produce quite a few local and nation ads and right now the majority are 4x3despite us shooting them in widescreen and HD for the past 3 years. There is only one client (Home Depot) that is moving into HD for the ads we do. Infact this past week we just finished our first two, but they are still going out to most of the markets as SD and 4x3, not even letterboxed. Every single one of our local clients refuse to move to 16x9 even in SD. You'll notice most local spots, no matter what the location, love to cram the screen full of lower thirds, graphics and other titles and it is easier in the 4x3 aspect. I may leave the footage letterboxed but then the black bars get filled with logos, text and what not.

So since the changeover in 2009 is just from analog to digital it will have no affect on broadcast commercials and it has nothing to do with 16x9 vs 4x3 or SD vs HD. Zero will change in our workflow or the delivery of commercials. They'll still be delivered on good ol Beta SP tape. We are now doing some digital distribution of spots though which is pretty cool.

Im lucky due to the nature of the target output. Im a motion designer and 90% of my creative is geared towards digital signage which is 16:9 (presently MPG2 at 1440x1080). Its been awhile since Ive done anything at 4:3

Wish I could say the same, as I hate 4x3. And I should change my reply on saying that every one of our clients refuse 16x9. All our local commercial clients are that way, but our DVD clients are finally getting onboard with 16x9 anamorphic releases.

One good thing though is because of Home Depot and TUFF Shed, we are getting some Blu-ray burners just to record their new HD commercials for them to review.

The 2009 change doesn't affect aspect ratio. Just broadcasting. It is an FCC issue, and affects a lot more than just TV broadcasting.

I think they will upgrade to HD and embrace the new widescreen aspect ratio.
