Default HBO developing a third WWII miniseries with Tom Hanks & Steven Spielberg

Quote:
HBO confirmed Friday (1/18/2013) that it is developing a third World War II miniseries from Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.

Joining an oeuvre that already includes 2001's Band of Brothers and 2010's The Pacific, the untitled miniseries will explore the aerial wars through the eyes of enlisted men of the Eighth Air Force -- known as the men of the Mighty Eighth. The project will use as its source material historian Donald L. Miller’s nonfiction tome Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany.

Spielberg, Hanks and Gary Goetzman again will serve as executive producers via Hanks and Goetzman’s Playtone and Spielberg’s Amblin Television. HBO executives have been in discussions about a third World War II miniseries for several months. Justified creator Graham Yost, who wrote several episodes of Band of Brothers and The Pacific, recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he was eager to reteam with Hanks and Spielberg on another WWII epic. And now that the source material has been optioned, the project can move into development. Additional source material might be added later.
SWEET!!!!!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that this series might be really good....

Thanks for the news.

Both of those shows are fantastic and I'm sure anything this will be great, as well.

I was kind of hoping they would make a Vietnam series seeing as they have covered WWII in two series already.

Saw the news earlier. I still need to watch Band of Brothers and The Pacific completely

I've seen the first couple of episodes for both, but I'll finally sit down and watch all of them before the third mini-series comes out.

Pretty much makes that Band of Brothers/Pacific BD giftset obsolete because there's no way they won't package all three together in one set in the future. No way.

Still, this should be exciting. There's going to be a lot of CG work to make this work for television but it'll be done the right way.

Whenever I see Tom Hanks and some war mentioned in the same sentence, I think of

I think there was a SNL skit or something poking fun at it too

Awsome news and about damn time if you ask me! Finally a series devoted to the 8th AF about the men who went through hell in the skies over Europe. And if Speilberg and Hanks are doing it you know its gonna be good.

I sort of want there to be a great series based off of the current war.

Band of Brothers is the greatest miniseries ever made, but I was very disappointed by The Pacific. Let's hope this is more like Band of Brothers.

I have yet to watch Band of Brothers and The Pacific. If I were to watch them now, is there anything I should know going in?

Just that you're missing out on one of the two greatest mini-series in history... Start now!

They are different from one another, as were their respective theaters, but I rate them both as 5+ stars.

I'm with you on that. Would not mind seeing a Revolution or Civil War series as well.

OK, send me your "obsolete" gift set. I'll offer it a willing home for unwanted box sets and even pay your postage.

I think a miniseries on the Korean War or WWI would be great. Those two wars are often forgotten in film.
