Criterion The In-Laws (1979)

The In-Laws Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Quote:
New 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
Audio commentary from 2003 featuring director Arthur Hiller, actors Alan Arkin and Peter Falk, and writer Andrew Bergman
New interview with Arkin
In Support of “The In-Laws,” a new interview program featuring actors Ed Begley Jr., Nancy Dussault, James Hong, and David Paymer
Trailer
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by comedy writer Stephen Winer and a 2011 recollection of the making of the film by Hiller
Quote:
Peter Falk and Alan Arkin make for a hilarious dream team in this beloved American sidesplitter. Directed by Arthur Hiller from an ingenious script by Andrew Bergman, The In-Laws may at first seem like a generic meet-the-parents comedy, as Arkin’s mild-mannered dentist suspiciously eyes Falk’s volatile mystery man, whose son is engaged to his daughter. But soon, through a series of events too serpentine and surprising to spoil, the two men are brought together by a dangerous mission that takes them from suburban New Jersey to Honduras. Fueled by elaborate stunt work and the laconic, naturalistic charms of its two stars, The In-Laws deserves its status as a madcap classic—and has continued to draw ardent fans in the years since its release.

It might not be the best film of the bunch announced today...but it's certainly my favorite! This is a pleasant surprise! "Beaks?! The flies had beaks?!!"

I would like to know how they got this from Warners? I can't find any info if it was a independently financed film, with Warners acting as distribution only...

As of 2015, Warner finally released their death grip on their catalog and it seems their floodgates have opened for Criterion, which has The New World, The Before Trilogy, The Player, and McCabe & Mrs. Miller coming, among others.

Cover is fantastic! Excellent news, really hope this and "The Player" have the original Logos at the beginning and are in their correct aspect ratio of 1:85:1. Really fed up with the higher ups telling WHV to cut off the original logos and release original OAR 1:85:1 movies in 1:78:1 or 1:77:1 from WHV, and WAC respectively.

Really hope the best has yet to come and would for the bias of more bonus features, interviews, promos, essays, proper restorations, color timing correct OAR, and original Logos from the beginning and end of these films are finally done justice by Criterion:

Wishlist:
From WB: A Face In The Crowd, The Ballad Of Cable Hogue, Summer of 42, Death In Venice, McCabe (scratch that IT IS COMING!), The Candidate, Blume In Love, Scarecrow, O Lucky Man!, Mean Streets (with more bonus features & the correct Warner SB Logos), Animals Are Beautiful People, The Yakuza, Barry Lyndon (Correct European OAR of 1:66:1 & Original Warner SB Logo), All The President's Men (With Proper Color Timing & Warner Saul Bass Logo), The Ritz, The Goodbye Girl, Straight Time, Boulevard Nights, Local Hero

From Pre-1986 Turner Owned MGM:
Adam's Rib, Bad Day At Black Rock, The Hill, Blow Up, Ryan's Daughter, Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid (Turner Preview Cut with the scene with Pat Garrett and his wife), Diner (Would REALLY love another go at this taking advantage of a BD50) Year Of Living Dangerously (proper restoration of the original theatrical cut), Year Of The Dragon, Ginger And Fred

From the Pre late 1982 - Orion Pictures/Warner films:
The Great Santini, Prince Of The City

I like it, but I will always pass on a 40 buck movie. I can buy 4 blu-rays for that.

Wait for a Criterion 50% off sale.
That's what I'll be doing.
Most excellent comedy!

Criterion doesn't even sell their releases at their retail price, so it wouldn't even be $40 if you ordered it from them.

Just wait for one of the bi-yearly B&N sales (which this release will coincide with) or a semi-regular Amazon sale.

You can easily spend that much going to a movie theater. Heck, $40 probably won't even cover it. And you only get to watch the film once (if your fellow audience members behave civilized).

I remember watching this hilarious movie in the early 1980s on HBO with my Dad. I have nothing but fond memories of it.

I wonder now that Warner is allowing Criterion to release some of their stuff if Ken Russell's The Devils might be in the future?
