United Kingdom ROBOCOP: The Complete 1994 TV Series releasing June 5th 2023

RoboCop: The Complete Series Blu-ray

This has just recently popped up on Amazon. It is being brought to the UK market by Screenbound Pictures. I contacted them to see if this would be a straight re-release of the Liberation Hall cropped offering and it is not. This was their reply.

Firstly, we are keeping the 4:3 aspect ratio. We are aiming for 2 Blu-ray discs, most likely BD50s. Audio will be the same as the US release.

Lastly, we are restoring the picture, meaning we will achieve a better HD picture, compared to the US and German release.

This is all we have at the moment. The disc number and disc format (BD25 / BD50) could be subject to change as we go down the manufacturing road."

Looking forward to this one.

Sounds promising! Will def be waiting for reviews, but if it is reasonably priced and in the correct aspect-ratio, I'll be ordering!

I'll reserve judgment for now.

Retaining the OAR is great, but the disc count is a major concern given it's 23 episodes.

A lot also rides on what the source of their master is, which we don't know, and what "restoring" they're doing.

They'd have to sell blank discs to do a worse job than the other releases and that's borderline!

Wow when I saw this pop up on Amazon, I assumed it'd just be a port of the crappy US release, given the cover art looks identical. Glad Screenbound appears to be prepping a much better release

I remember enjoying some it more than Robocop 3, but that's not saying a lot

If you want to try it, it's currently showing on obscure UK Freeview Channel 'That's TV' (ch. 65) every morning at 2am.

If not, imagine all the worst, most child-friendly bits of Robocop 3 & drag that out for 22 episodes. With even poorer acting & 1/100th of the budget.

The only positives I can think of are; the suit still looks good & they kept some of the sound effects from the movies.

That description is bang on ; I remember when ITV first showed this on Saturday afternoons and after watching the first three episodes, twelve year old me said to myself "this just isn't Robocop" and I gave up on it. One thing that has always stuck out in my mind was that Robo never seemed to use his gun for violent purposes ; if there was a sand bag hanging from the raffters, he would shoot that to make it land on the bad guys as they were running away.

That's what happens when you get PG-13 protocols added to your subroutines.

Didn't have this release on my 2023 bingo card but eh why not, Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation and Freddy's Nightmares should be next!

Honestly, the series is what it is. If you go in fully aware that it's TV-friendly and lacking the violence of the first two movies, it's perfectly watchable. I think if it was actually given a proper HD remastering, it'd look less cheap than it currently does. That whole shot-on-film-edited-on-video look of the era makes every show look cruddy, especially when it's edited on NTSC tape.

Weirdly the animated series aimed at children was much more anarchic and violent based on a couple of those I watched. It captures the tone of the original films better despite the missing gore and swearing.
