Never gonna happen. We'll always have dedicated platforms for games. Streaming is never gonna take off when it comes to games.

Sony already said that right at the PS4 launch, that at the moment they don't have any plans or talks about a PS5. However, Sony just recently focused their business on their playstation division due to its more than expected success.

Also, we know that the Xbox division has only been breaking even yet here they still are. And with Nintendo's announcement of working on their next generation console, despite the WiiU's sales numbers, leads me to believe the home console will continue to exist.

Another thing to point out would be steam machines, they know there's a market.

I am not a big console fan but i had a playstation and a playstation 3 in the past but i think its the people behind consoles like playstation and xbox that have themselves to blame because if you buy a ps3 console then you only get two or three years then they come out with another new console ps4.
The other thing is the price of games is too much.

I'm sure somewhere Sony is already working on the PS5. They usually always start working on the next console in some way or shape after the last one has been released. Might not be major but something.

PS3 had an 8 year span and is still getting a few of the new games. That's long than enough for a consoles lifespan.

Buying late into a game generation is not Sony's/MS/Nintendo's fault. Game prices do suck but at least they haven't gone up thankfully.

its typically 4-5 years before a new console comes out and playstation supports their older system for atleast 5 years after launching a new system... so your logic is flawed only those who want and have the extra income run out and buy systems as soon as they launch ,... PS4 was actually my first ever console i bought on launch ( excluding handhelds ) ....

2 or 3?? more like 7. Also, they have been supporting their consoles for 10years at a time. They do not instantly drop support for the previous console.

Yeah, more companies are not releasing games on PS3/360 but they still had a great 8 years and still does get support. Just not all games.

The only other new console we will see for the next 5 to 6 years is from Nintendo simply because they need to try to match up to the PS4 and XB1 in terms of graphics and in terms of performance altogether. I'd like to think that Microsoft and Sony are going to stay with their consoles respectively, for a long duration.

Doubt that they will go ever go full streaming... but I am sure a streaming solution for each platform (Nintendo, Playstation, Xbox) will not be too far off.

And doesn't Playstation already have this with the Playstation TV... and Microsoft will have it with Win 10?

This 8th generation of consoles will probably be the shortest of the past 3-4 generations, but no way gen 9 goes full stream and incorporates the mobile structure since that platform's structure is for when you are taking a dump or screwing off at work... not a multiple hour sit down and play with friends like the console and PC markets are.

And the industry has already seen those who have tried to incorporate the Mobile structure on the PC or Console platforms fail, but the Twitch boss can say whatever he wants.

I can only hope that Twitch fades sooner than later... This pay to watch people play fade has to end sooner than later. Yes, I understand its point when it comes to broadcasting events... but these idiots streaming 24/7 and asking for money has to go.

That's certainly not what twitch is in the slightest. Sure theres probably a few people that do that.

Like it or not, Game walkthroughers are just as legitimate a career choice as acting now. It's an industry. We're changing the world and the careers available.

I'm hoping we don't see another 7+year generation.

We should be getting new hardware every 4-5 years just like we used to back in the day.

Tech advances way too fast to justify spending 8 years on outdated consoles like they did last gen. Keep them coming at 5 year intervals with a £300-£350 price tag.

In Nintendo's case they are sticking to their roots and will are keeping to the 5 year cycle which I commend them for.

The guy in the link seems to be suggesting a set top box rather than a dedicated console. He didn't mention streaming so I assumed he meant Roku style box but with more capable hardware to run games. That sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

Thanks guys for your replies. Keep them coming.

I know technology is moving fast but what is wrong with physical media its scary that the next generation will not know or experience of going to a shop to buy the game or movie they want.

I'm not even going to read the article in the link in first post. We've heard this story before. Consoles are NOT going away anytime that I can see. There will be a PS5 and PS6 and XBOX Whatever followed by XBOX Whatever 2. Not to mention whatever Nintendo does.

Console gaming ain't going away.
