Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed its upcoming Blu-ray release of Gabe Polsky's documentary Red Army (2014). The release will be available for purchase on June 9.

Official synopsis: Red Army is an inspiring true story about the Cold War played out on the ice rink, and a man who stood up to a powerful system, paving the way for generations of Russians. From Oscar-nominated and Emmy award-winning filmmakers, Red Army examines the most successful dynasty in sports history: the Red Army hockey team. Told from the perspective of its captain, Slava Fetisov, the story portrays his transformation from national hero to political enemy. With the demise of Communism came the end of the Cold War, as Soviet players began joining the National Hockey League. The film examines how sport mirrors social and cultural movements in Cold War Russia.

Red Army was executive produced by Werner Herzog, Jerry Weintraub and Liam Satre-Meloy.

As someone who is not a hockey fan, I saw this and found it to be excellent. I'm glad to see some substantial-looking extras from Sony, too.

Sounds good. And I must say that poster is amazing . The BD's cover art on the other hand is way too noisy, and just feels off in terms of how it's composed.

As mentioned in another thread, if you price match it to Amazon or Best Buy's $17.99 price, it comes down to $9 and change (after tax) with the cartwheel coupon.
