I've seen some Cartoon Network ones and ones for Invader Zim. But because of the format, you only got like 1-2 normal length episodes or 2-4 half episodes.

Several 'family' titles from Warner were on Mini-DVD. I never bought any of the actual movies because I couldn't bring myself to buy a "formatted to fit your screen" version of any movie, plus they were split up onto 2 single-sided discs when they could have used one 2-sided one. I did buy a Scooby Doo direct-to-video movie and a couple basketball highlights discs at the dollar store though, just to have them as I collect odd and failed media formats. They came with a brochure that showed the Cyberhome portable player that only played 3-inch discs- wonder how many of THOSE were sold?

Universal and a few other studios were said to be releasing mini-DVDs as well, but I guess Warner's didn't sell enough for them to bother. At least you can still get blank 3-inch DVDs.

That article reminded me of the ADV Films Ani-Minis.

Batman Mask of the Phantasm was released on mini-DVD. It was 2 discs and you had to switch discs mid way through the movie like a laserdisc to see the whole thing.

A long time ago Nntendo mailed me a promotional video introducing the then new GameCube, and it was on a mini DVD. That's the only one I own.

Mini-DVDs are DVDs that are similar in size to like Gamecube discs. Which also means they hold a lot less data on each disc. Mostly was used for camcorders to record on.

They're 3 inches instead of the standard 5. 3-inch CDs were out for a while in 1988 too, but they didn't really take off- you can still get blank 3-inch CDs as well though.

I don't remember how many gigs are on a 3-inch DVD, but you could probably compress a movie enough to fit on one if you really wanted to. The only blanks out are single-layer, but many of the Warner discs that were out were dual-layer.

Just remembered there was also a gift card you could buy in supermarkets for some mail-order DVD deal, and it came with a 3-inch dual-layer DVD with previews on it.

Never tried the mini dvds but did use some of the mini cds. Problem is the size - you have to have a tray so a PS3 or car stereo is no good. Would be interested in seeing how this works out for you though.

I got a hybrid of a mini dvd with Star Trek nemesis DVD years ago.
I say hybrid because its not a perfect circular DVD.
It has a screen saver on it and perhaps a trailer or some special features.
Not an actual movie.

Here are pictures of it as an example. I took the pictures of it on the back of a regular DVD for size comparison.

On the back side of the mini dvd you can see where the smaller 3 inch grove lines are (only about 3/4 of the circle is there) but it sits in the small circle in a cd tray. You can also see due to the odd shape of the DVD there are portions of the dvd that extend past the 3 inch circle.

They are 1.46GB vs 4.7 GB for a single sided DVD. they were not optimal for movies since you couldn't store a full movie without alot of compression. if I recall right they were marketed for data storage due to smaller size but since DVD's held 3+ times more data I don't think they ever really fit the market. I also recall at 1 point they appeared in some Video Cameras. they actually had a small mini dvd recroder in the video camera but then that quickly was overtaken with media cards which were smaller and could hold more data.

I just checked Wiki and it looks like there are dual sided and dual layer mini dvds that offer other sizes and a dual sided dual layer that will do about 5.2GB. So you could fit a full length movie on there like a single sided DVD.
