Criterion The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

It is my favorite movie in a very long time.

The technical dazzle of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a truly astonishing thing to behold: this story of a man who ages backwards requires Brad Pitt to begin life as a tiny elderly man, then blossom into middle age, and finally, wisely, become young. How director David Fincher--with makeup artists, special-effects wizards, and body doubles--achieves this is one of the main sources of fascination in the early reels of the movie. The premise is loosely borrowed from an F. Scott Fitzgerald story (and bears an even stronger resemblance to Andrew Sean Greer's novel The Confessions of Max Tivoli), with young/old Benjamin growing up in New Orleans, meeting the girl of his dreams (Cate Blanchett), and sharing a few blissful years with her until their different aging agendas send them in opposite directions. The love story takes over the second half of the picture, as Eric Roth's script begins to resemble his work on Forrest Gump. This is too bad, because Benjamin's early life is a wonderfully picaresque journey, especially a set of midnight liaisons with a Russian lady (Tilda Swinton) in an atmospheric hotel. Fincher observes all this with an entomologist's eye, cool and exacting, which keeps the material from getting all gooey. Still, the Hurricane Katrina framing story feels put-on, and the movie lets Benjamin slide offscreen during its later stages--curious indeed.--Robert Horton

Default Rumor: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on May 5th, 2009

HDRoom is reporting a rumored May 5th release for David Fincher's Benjamin Button. No other details have been posted at this time, but they are a generally reputable source.

I can't wait to pick this one up.

Home Media Magazine had the film on the cover of this week's issue. Didn't have a street date listed but the order cutoff is March 24th, so May 5th sounds right.

Haven't seen this one yet but I have really enjoyed every other Fincher movie thus far (well, apart from Aliens 3 which I have not seen) so I'll be blind buying this in May. Hopefully this leads to some announcements of other Fincher movies, Se7en and Fight Club being my most anticipated but I'd be psyched for The Game or Panic Room as well.

Amazing movie, first day buy here
I agree that this is a first day purchase for me but it didn't get shut out of the Oscars. Fincher and Pitt didn't win and it didn't win Best Picture but it did win for some of it's technical brilliance.

I'm a huge Fincher fan, but this was my least favorite of his. The special effects were amazing and it wasn't a bad movie, but it just left me feeling meh.

Definitely not your typical Fincher film. I could understand why a lot of Fincher fans wouldn't like this. His films tend to feel a bit nihilistic and this film goes in the exact opposite direction.

Great movie though. While I didn't like it quite as much as Zodiac it still exceeded my expectations. Can't wait to see it in high-def.

The major difference between this and Fincher's other movies is that this wasn't a dark thriller of any sort. Se7en, Fight Club, and Zodiac all contained a fair numbers of extremely low-lit scenes.

Button, on the other hand, is a love story that was almost a 180 from those others films and I applaud Fincher for doing it. For one, I really dug the film. Also, it's nice to see a director step outside of his comfort zone and hit one out of the park.

Fincher+Pitt= Solid Movie!
