Default Rockula (1990) - March 20, 2018

Official word for Luca Bercovici's ROCKULA (1990), coming in March from Scream Factory.

Quote:
**NEW TITLE ANNOUNCEMENT**

He's a 400-year-old virgin who wants to rock and roll all night! The 1990 horror-comedy ROCKULA sinks its fangs onto Blu-ray for the first time next Spring and features an all-new HD transfer!

Ralph (Dean Cameron, Summer School) is just your typical, average vampire with love in his heart, music in his veins — and a curse on his head. Every 22 years, poor Ralph is doomed to lose his soulmate, Mona, at the hands of a rhinestone-peg-legged pirate brandishing a large hambone (just go with us on this). But this time around, with the help of his newly-formed band Rockula, Ralph is determined to crush the curse once and for all — and show Mona that when you're a vampire, true love is eternal … and rock 'n' roll never dies!

Directed by Luca Bercovici (Ghoulies) and featuring an eclectic cast of co-stars, including cult favorite Susan Tyrrell (Forbidden Zone) and recording stars Thomas Dolby, Toni Basil, and Bo Diddley, Rockula is an absolutely batty, bloody bizarre comedy!

Extras are in progress and national street date is March 20th. However, you can pre-order now directly through us @ https://www.shoutfactory.com/product...roduct_id=6629 to have the item ship two weeks early!

One of those titles I never thought would be on blu (or even dvd). Nice! Silly film as expected and enjoyable as light camp.

I cant believe no one else replied...AND this is not noticed in the review.

Just got mine at the last sale and yes, super choppy just during the rap scene. Hard to watch choppy.

Sorry if this is considered necroposting, but I am both relieved and annoyed to see it's not only my copy with this problem. I tried the version on Tubi as well and it looked the same. I'm wondering if it's an issue with the movie itself because uploads of that scene on YouTube from 8-to-16 years ago (meaning it couldn't have been from Shout's Blu-Ray) are similarly choppy.

Sadly, I have to share some responsibility for this film being produced. I recommended that Alex De Benedetti have a look at this as a possible project indicating that, with the right direction and tongue-in-cheek approach it could be fun.

The finished film isn't nearly as fun as reading the screenplay and imagining what someone like, say, David Lynch could have done with it. THAT would have been fun. While Alex passed on the project, he did pass it along eventually to the producer of of the film.

I will probably have to atone for my sins by watching this again...

I bought the Laserdisc for this in the 90's and loved it, I have been wanting this blu-ray since it was announced but held off until about 4 months ago when Shout had it on sale and just my luck it was backordered, well today I just got my shipping notice, I can't wait to own this.

Shame there's apparently an issue with this release; I haven't opened my copy yet. But I have listened to some interviews with Dean lately after reading through the discussion in the Summer School thread. He seems like such a down to earth guy who would be fun to hang out with compared to a lot of actors. It's good to see when these guys develop other ways to survive when the leading or higher billing movie roles start drying up; pretty cool to hear he taught himself how to code/program in the 90s when there weren't as many tutorials around compared to today.

Did anyone on this forum happen to see Rockula in theaters 30-years ago? And if so, can you confirm if the choppy rap scene was there as well or if it's a problem introduced with the home video version? (I know, fat chance right?)

Based on the Blu, around minute 40 to minute 42.

What's choppy about it? It's on youtube, and it looks bad, but I don't know if that's how it looks in the movie or if it's just a bad upload.

It looks rough on youtube, but it also looks reminiscent of some mid-80's music videos (which were also laughably hard to watch) so maybe it was a deliberate stylistic choice.

EDIT: Also worth noting that Shout's got this listed in their store as something that's going Out of Print

That one song in particular freezes every other frame which doesn't happen anywhere else in the movie.

Saw Rockula on Prime recently, not the worst 80's slice of the pie out there but a bit dull in spots. Maybe some good features will come. I could see Dean Cameron doing a run down of his career in an interview.

I'm hoping they put My Demon Lover on Bluray with some bonuses but being a Warner Archive at the moment who knows.
