Criterion Lord of the Flies (1963)

Lord of the Flies Blu-ray

Lord of the Flies Blu-ray Review

Quote:
Synopsis: In the hands of the renowned experimental theater director Peter Brook, William Golding’s legendary novel on the primitivism lurking beneath civilization becomes a film as raw and ragged as the lost boys at its center. Taking an innovative documentary-like approach, Brook shot Lord of the Flies with an off-the-cuff naturalism, seeming to record a spontaneous eruption of its characters’ ids. The result is a rattling masterpiece, as provocative as its source material.
Quote:

New, restored 4K digital film transfer, supervised by cameraman and editor Gerald Feil, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
Audio commentary featuring director Peter Brook, producer Lewis Allen, director of photography Tom Hollyman, and Feil
Audio recordings of William Golding reading from his novel Lord of the Flies, accompanied by the corresponding scenes from the film
Deleted scene, with optional commentary and reading by Golding
Interview with Brook from 2008
Collection of behind-the-scenes material, featuring home movies, screen tests, outtakes, and stills
New interview with Feil
Excerpt from Feil’s 1972 documentary The Empty Space, showcasing Brook’s theater methods
Something Queer in the Warehouse, a piece composed of never-before-seen footage shot by the boy actors during production, with new voice-over by Tom Gaman, who played Simon
Trailer
PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Geoffrey Macnab and an excerpt from Brook’s book The Shifting Point

Sweetness. One of the rare situations where I liked the movie just as much as the book.

I love this film and book. I'm so excited Criterion is finally getting this out on Blu. Hopefully, someone will bother to release the 1990 version as well. Day 1 buy for me.

Also, AMAZING cover art!

I'm not big on movies from the 60's, but the 1990 version I think may have possibly scarred me as a kid. I need a blu of this. I may borrow the 63 versiion. I do LOVE the cover art though.

Really enjoy this movie and agree with others that the cover art is off the charts fantastic. A definite buy.

Anyone else think Roger and Simon are the main characters instead of Ralph and Jack? Ralph and Jack are the alpha males who set everything in motion, but Simon and Roger are the ordinary guys who are pulled in certain directions for reasons unknown. That's really the heart of the book IMO. I actually wish the movie spent more time with Roger and Simon. The book gives you a better feel for their mindset, but that is just a minor complaint.

Turned on Turner Classic Movies and this is on. I've never seen it before. Very good what I've seen so far. Definitely getting the Criterion Blu-ray ASAP.

It just went off. I got in on the 30 minute mark but I was surprised this has nudity in it. I know it's meant to be completely innocent as they're only children. But still wasn't expecting that. Great movie tho.

I love the '63 version (didn't care much for the remake). I just wish they had a bigger budget for the

Yea missed the opening of it. Speaking of Criterion, is B&N not having a sale this month? Or is it July.

I watched the 1963 version a couple weeks back, right after finishing the book. It does a pretty good job adapting it. I haven't seen the 1990 version yet. I can try and answer any questions you have if you want.
