Universal Studios An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991) (Walmart Exclusive)

Along with Balto, it looks like Universal has quietly released An American Tail: Fievel Goes West as a Walmart exclusive. Like the other Universal WM exclusives, this should get a wide release down the line. This release is currently only available in stores.

Quote:
In this animated sequel to An American Tale, Fievel Mousekewitz strikes out from not-so-enthralling New York City in a wagon train headed West. Helping propel the departure is a crafty cat named Cat R. Waul (John Cleese) who tells our Fievel that out West the cats and mice get along just fine. Once on the trail, Fievel finds that the cat's real plan is mice meat pie out of the little rodents, and Fievel tries his darndest to warn everyone, but to no avail. On his side, however, are a couple of friendly cats, including one named Tiger (Dom Deluise).

So, how's the PQ on this one compared to the original film?

I held off on the first one due to the PQ being poor. However, if there's ever a set of both of these I might buy it for cheap.

So do Universal actually want to sell copies of these blurays? Being Wal-Mart exclusive is one thing, but if you want to generate interest in your product you kind of have to, you know, let people know that it exists.

I agree but since these are cheap catalog titles in low quantities they just don't want to go all out for them.

Doesn't cost much to print out a publicity sheet.

They put out press notices for the wide release dates, but not for the store exclusive ones from wbat I've seen. But even then, nothing major.

I'll wait for opinions on the transfer before going to WM. At the very least it'll be nice to have in widescreen for the first time since the old LD.

Reguarding Balto, wasn't the VHS and FF DVD heavily cropped? I don't remember exactly but it definitely wasn't opened up like American Tail and the others, but felt like they used a theatrical print (or was animated in full widescreen unlike most Bluth works) and did one hell of a crop job to it.

Vudu has these two in HDX and look to be the same elements used on the 4:3 DVDs but in the TARs. Knowing Universal, I assume the BDs will use the same HD masters but with much better compression (some of Vudu's compression reminds me of YTs rampant blocking, especially on heavily grainy films like these).
