I'll be definitely looking to buy these 2 when they're released. The Circus is a minor gem whilst City Lights is arguable Chaplin's masterpiece.

Now where's Monsieur Verdoux ? A vastly under-rated black comedy.

I'm sure it and Limelight and/or A King in New York will be paired up release date wise, as they are Chaplin's lesser-known works compared to his silents, Modern Times and The Great Dictator.

Wonderful film, indeed. I really like the fact that Park Circus are bringing Charlie's films to Blu-ray. Hopefully, they could bring some other classic films through their partnerships with MK2.

CNN reports today:
Quote:
'Cell phone' spotted in silent film from 1928

(CNN) -- It's not shocking to see a woman talking on her cell phone while walking down the street. It is, however, shocking when the woman is an extra in a silent film from 1928.

Charlie Chaplin's "The Circus" is getting internet buzz with a clip from the black-and-white comedy spreading at viral speed.

The clip -- a DVD extra spotted by filmmaker George Clarke -- shows a woman holding what some say appears to be a mobile phone to her ear and talking.

The only explanation: She's a time traveler.

At least that's the word on the Web.

In the late 1920s, Chaplin was nominated for an Academy Award for acting, writing, directing and producing "The Circus," but he was taken out of the running and presented with a "Special Award" instead.

Perhaps the Academy didn't think it was fair to include him in the race -- what with the use of technology from the future and all.

We're just curious who operates her mobile network.

Question

Could someone tell me if the U, obviously for Universal, on the cover mean it will play in all players but requires a television that takes PAL, or does it mean it will play in all players and will also play on all televisions? I have certain 0 zone PAL DVDs that will not work on my NTSC only high-def screen. Thanks for the help.

Universal=suitable for all audiences (age) RATING. Has nothing to do with playability in different regions, PAL/NTSC-systems, etc.

Edit: just ordered City Lights! I am very excited to see it again after a long time and in HD!

Here's my user review for The Circus: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-C...1/#UserReviews

Criterion really spoiled us with that Modern Times blu-ray. I watched the Modern Times blu-ray before watching The Circus blu-ray, and there is a huge difference in video quality. The video quality on The Circus is better than previous DVD versions, but it's not an eye-opening, impressive-looking blu-ray as Modern Times is. The Circus has a vertical scratch in the middle for the majority of the film, which comes and goes. I guess it was too hard to remove? I don't know. The video quality is very bright, but not as 3-dimensional as the Modern Times blu-ray. I know it may be unfair to compare the two, but I just connect all the Chaplin movies together, so I would assume that if Modern Times can be restored to perfection on blu-ray, then why not his other films? I watched a little bit of The Circus DVD that comes with this blu-ray too. Eventhough the blu-ray is better than the DVD, I was more impressed with what they did with the DVD than what they did with the blu-ray. I'll still watch the blu-ray over the DVD though. The DTS-HD on the Circus blu-ray is just amazing. I'm happy that was pretty flawless.
The extras are photo gallery, introduction by some critic, outtakes, and interesting featurettes about the controversy surrounding the movie (Chaplin never writes about The Circus in his autobiography because the movie revolved around his difficult lawsuit divorce. Also, the movie went through a lot of Terry Gilliam-type filmming obstacles). It's amazing that he was able to complete the film and release a perfect film as well. There is also an interesting featurette with Emir Kusturica (my favorite director of all time) on how he's influenced by Chaplin too.

The movie is a laugh-out-loud funny movie and totally worth buying on blu-ray. If Criterion ever releases this film, I probably would upgrade though.

Movie: 5
Video: 3.5
Audio: 4.5
Extras: 3
Overall: 4

Default City Light's aspect ratio is wrong!

If the Blu-Ray edition of City Light is really 1.33:1 it is wrong!

City Lights was formatted at 1.08:1, i.e. prior to the academy ratio format.

The old Image DVD contains the full photogram, from a restored print. It also contains a new PCM stereo soundtrack conducted by music scholar Carl Davis. I would be pleased if this new score sees the light of the day (no pun intended) on Blu. If not, I am keeping my DVD!

Just found this

They also have The Circus, Limelight, City Lights, The Kid, Modern Times, Great Dictactor, Woman in Paris, King in New York and Gold Rush.

But I'm not sure on the region coding of any of the Chaplin films from Pan Vision and these (Dutch?) releases.

I would buy these but all the extra features off the original DVDs are not on the blu-ray. I was looking to upgrade, but if I bought these then I would have to keep the DVDs as well

Is there a licensing issue reason why they are not on?

I didn't realise I had the last post on here

Anyway, is City Lights out of print? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Not for a reasonable price anyway. That's the only title I need to get apart from The Gold Rush

Moviemail don't really have it in stock, not when they list a despatch time of 4 weeks. So it looks like costing me £19.99. I can't believe Blackwell's hold the only stock

I e-mailed Park Circus yesterday so I will see what they come back with before I make any purchases

These clowns deserve nothing for their slapdash "efforts" to putting these films on Blu-ray.

And to hell with Criterion's region locking.

I'm still trying to get hold of the Park Circus release of City Lights. A lot of websites have listings, but they don't have it in stock. I placed an order with Amazon UK on the 16th July when there was a purchase link, but they never have it in stock, and I keep getting later and later delivery dates

I've got all the other ones and this is the only one I need. Park Circus were no help of all when I e-mailed them as they told me to contact the retailer. Surely if they put out the title, they would have details of whether it is OOP or not

It's not even available on Ebay
