I was watching Thirteen Days (about the Cuban Missile Crisis) that came out in 2000. And in the opening scene there is supposed to be a U2 jet taking pictures as it flies over Cuba. And the plane literally looks plastic and that it's totally fake. In fact, it looks so bad at one point, it kinda took me out of the movie for awhile.
What movies does the CGI now look ancient in? I'm guessing most will be around 1999-early 2000s. ![]() |

As much as I love the damn film, Escape from L.A. has some of the worst CGI I have ever seen.

Thirteen Days always looked cheap to me.
![]() Recently re-watched Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Parts of it hold up. Others don't. At its worst, fuzziness, clunky and awkward animation, cartooniness. Was a bit disheartened to see how soft the [Show spoiler] actually looked in high-def.Star Wars is a mixed bag, go figure. The SE versions (with the added Mos Eisley stuff, the added Jabba scene) stick out worse on Blu-Ray. Thank goodness the model effects still look great. As for the prequels, AOTC seems so cartoony and weak now, but TPM and ROTS will always wow me a little. Some of the Lord of the Rings scene are starting to show their age. Some of the longer-range shots of Mount Doom, for example, stick out to me. Some creature effects. I think the movies themselves hold up well despite the CGI because of how much practical sets and effects are used--The Hobbit will not age well. Last time I watched Forrest Gump, the altered historic footage stuck out. Tom Hanks being inserted in those scenes looked okay, but once Nixon, Kennedy, and other guys opened their lips, was pretty obvious and cartoony-looking. Armageddon--those meteor strike scenes (especially the New York and Paris shots) used to wow me when I was in high-school. Nowadays, they just look too fake. Lost in Space--jeez, that space monkey needed to go. Always liked the space scenes (especially the ending bit when they fly through the crumbling planet). But some other stuff doesn't hold up (the future cities, alien spiders, etc). Mummy movies, as mentioned. They always looked rough though, it's like they cheaped out on giving everything fine texture. 1998's Godzilla--monster's a little too obvious in its own freakish way. Slightly improved with the 4K remastered disc. Battlefield Earth--I'm actually shocked as to how much of this still looks okay. Seriously. The ruined cities, flying ships, still look cool to me. But the elongated tongue was stupid. |

I love the film, but the plane crash at the end of Air Force One looks terrible. I remember it looking bad back in '97 when I saw it in the theater, but it looks even worse 20 years later.

That is pretty bad but what embarrasses me most about that otherwise fantastic film is the scenes when they are gliding on the cable from one plane to another right before it crashes. Some of the worst blue screen I have ever seen. It's awful.

Most CGI scenes in movies prior to the 2010s make me flinch.
Even in the better movies (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, etc.), certain CGI scenes stick out like a cockroach on a wedding cake. We're still a long way from perfection, but the best films these days at least have some semblance of seamlessness when it comes to CGI. (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Captain America: Civil War, Oblivion, etc.) |
