United Kingdom Anomalisa (Charlie Kaufman)

Anomalisa Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Anomalisa Upcoming Release Detailed

NEWS

Quote:
Curzon Artificial Eye have officially announced and detailed their upcoming Blu-ray release of Charlie Kaufman's first stop-motion film Anomalisa (2015). The release will be available for purchase on July 11.

Synopsis: From the mind of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) comes Anomalisa, a tender, touching and achingly funny black comedy, filmed entirely in breathtaking stop motion animation.

Michael Stone, a husband, father and successful motivational speaker, is crippled by the mundanity of his life. On a business trip to a customer service convention in Cincinnati he checks into his hotel and prepares to once more go through the motions. But this time a chance meeting with Lisa, an unassuming baked goods sales rep from a small country town, throws the dullness into disarray and Michael feels he may have just met someone who can make a change...

Smart, humorously absurd and bracingly humane, Anomalisa is a technically stunning work of animation, beautifully orchestrated by co-director Duke Johnson and scored by Carter Burwell (Carol, In Bruges, Fargo). Drawing brilliant performances from David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason-Leigh and Tom Noonan it sees Charlie Kaufman at his daring, dazzling best.

13 Featurettes

Really looking forward to this being released, it's took a bit longer than usual Artifical Eye releases.

Likely because it was released in multiplexes here, who insist on that four-month window; a lot of AE titles only show in indies and arthouses, and they're not as insistent on a lengthy theatrical window.

Being from Belfast, it's hard to get around the main character being called Michael Stone...

Is lack of subtitles the new thing now?

Finally watched this last night....visually stunning film, voice acting was great but the overall film was a bit of a disappointment for me. Id recommend a one off watch, but cant see myself ever returning to it. Not in the same league as Eternal sunshine,Adaptation or being john.

Totally agree. The human Sylvanian families didn't bother me but the only Kaufmanesque parts
[Show spoiler]turned out to be a dream/realisation
.
I couldn't warm to the protagonist as he was
[Show spoiler]just a sexual predator
so I didn't care if he
[Show spoiler]couldn't relate to anyone

Also, my wife needs subs but can just about get away with lipreading, when the characters have lips.

I really don't think you are supposed to warm to he male protagonist,
[Show spoiler]he is a typically (for Kaufmann) self-lacerating portrait of male, middle aged crisis. Not that this makes him more sympathetic, but there is more going on than him being a sexual predator. He desperately wants to be close to someone in more than a physical way and that is what really ends up being damaging. Lisa would have been OK with a one night stand (she does have agency in the situation), it's the breaking of the promise of a life together and his controlling behaviour which hurts her.

There aren't any Kaufmannesque parts, the entire film is typically Kaufmann in its use of meticulous stop frame animation for a type of film which anybody else would do with actors. The purpose is that you end up looking at things you've seen many times before in a different way. That sex scene weirdly enough feels more emotionally intimate for being done in stop motion, because there aren't human bodies to TVs on.
