Default Mill Creek does double features wrong...

Sometimes I just don't get why this company packages some films together. Examples include:
Identity & Vacancy (Why not just Vacancy 1&2?)
Happy Birthday to Me & When a Stranger Calls (Why not just both versions of Stranger?)
Ernest Goes to Camp & Ernest Goes to Jail (Why not Jail and Scared Stupid, having the BDs go in release order?)
Basic & SWAT (Why not SWAT 1&2?)

Just why?

It's not just Mill Creek. WB (I think) put Gremlins on a feature with The Goonies. But, does MC own the rights to the sequels?

This, I believe, is the issue. MC likely doesn't have the rights to the sequels. Maybe MC struck a deal with Sony only to include certain titles, meaning that while MC can release Vacancy, Vacancy 2 is still owned by Sony. This goes for other sequels as well.

I thought the stupidest one was Gremlins/Gremlins 2/The Goonies.

Why make that a 3-film collection instead of just leaving it at Gremlins 1&2 DOUBLE FEATURE? Adding the Goonies RUINED that collection for me. Now, I LOVE the Goonies, but it just doesn't go with Gremlins 1 & 2.

DUMB choice in my opinion.

...but this was a budget release from Warner Brothers where you could obtain Gremlins 1, Gremlins 2, AND Goonies for the price of any one alone previously. I don't understand the objection, it's like WB gave away free movies by bundling them together.

Actually Mill Creek also does budget releases. I sure did appreciate being able to purchase Happy Birthday To Me in high definition at all - much less for $5 AND including another title with it; even if that other title didn't obviously match, it was a great bonus.

Gremlins and The Goonies both have Steven Spielberg connections, so their pairing does have sense behind it.

While I would have loved to have When A Stranger Calls BACK included with the first film I don't think the rights reside with Mill Creek.

It was distributed by Universal (though I don't believe it was ever put into theaters in the US. It was a "tv movie" that they sold to Showtime I think)

Goodtimes distributed the DVD release back in the day (same as The Funhouse/Halloween 2/Halloween 3) all of which were licensed out from Universal so I would assume Universal still has the rights. Perhaps SCREAM factory will get their hands on it at some point.

And they're both written by Chris Columbus, and there's an in-joke reference to Gremlins in The Goonies, so they officially are set in the same "universe".

I asked them once why they didn't pair up The Color of Night with Hudson Hawk and they pointed out that the distributors also must be the same. Even if Mill Creek has the rights to two films, they can't be paired up if they're from separate distributors.

I agree that it seems totally nonsensical, but the fact that many could be had for $2.96 at Wal-Mart and you can find them for $5 or less (often used) on Amazon? I'll take it. Think I have all but two or three.

No. Just no. It doesn't matter what connections... they have nothing to do with each other. If they were the same genre of movies, I'd say sure, but these two? No.

Did you ask them how they goofed up the audio track of Hudson Hawk?

If you haven't done so already, Mill Creek is offering replacements for it.

If you trace it far enough (I have), Airplane, Knight Rider and 2001 are in the same universe as Gremlins.

No. No, they are not.

You might be confusing them with Echo Bridge. Mill Creek has a strong enough reputation that when a studio decides to stop distribution, MC usually wins the bid to continue handling it. They use the same elements as before albeit wirh different compression codecs.

The only blight was the July wave which is partially the fault of Sony for providing inferior audio elements. Matter of fact, Sony did the same thing to Netflix; Last Action Hero used to have 5.1 audio on Netflix, its now stereo.

steve "most" (that is with few exceptions) they put out crap titles and the transfers stink. the cases are also horrible and they often times use paper envelopes inside them. i have a couple of mill creek sets but most of their stuff just isn't for me. even for like $5.
