Do you watch movies directly off the disc or do you back them up to a HDD and watch them through a home media centre app like Kodi (formally XMBC) or Plex, or even iTunes for Apple TV. What ever your choice why do you do that?

Always on disc. Never really thought of watching them on a media centre. Just give me a TV and a Blu-ray player and I'm good. I've watched movies on computer a couple of times for the hell of it and didn't enjoy the experience. More comfortable in my chair in front a bigger TV

Disc only. The only exceptions to that are: When I am stuck somewhere with my phone where I use VUDU. I also have my favorite BDs ripped straight to some external hardrives so I can watch them on my PC anytime.

I watch the disc directly.
To do otherwise would feel almost like baking a fresh pizza, taking the toppings off of the pizza, microwaving them, and putting them back on the pizza crust. |

Everything I own, be it DVD/Blu Ray/Digital Files, Movies/Tv Series', Music, Family photos/home movies, etc is backed up on 15 TB of HDD's. I run Plex throughout my home and online so I'm always connected to my media. With that said, anytime I watch a film that I only own on DVD, I'll usually just use Plex as the quality is essentially the same. All TV show watching is also done via plex, as not having to switch disc, plus having episode synopsis' on the fly is just too nice. For my movie watching on Blu Ray, it's always on Disc to ensure I get the best quality possible. A big part of the reason I have everything backed up however is so that my wife and daughter never have to touch my Blu Rays ever again, and so that all content can be viewed on any tv/tablet/phone/computer in the house without having to track down a disc. As I still fully believe that Blu Ray will be the last physical format for a long time (if not forever) I intend to keep my collection in as good of shape as possible... this was an extra measure of prevention on my part.
I will say that if you take the time and effort to back up the films losslessly, there is no difference between using the disc's or a media server. So all the expensive Home Theater Equipment will still sound and look just as nice as any disc. With that said I'm a BIG proponent of Physical Media and also shout "Long Live Physical Media!" every chance I get. |

I tried Plex several years ago, but didn't like the file structure. Has it improved any?
(What I mean is, instead of allowing me to choose which directories to look in, Plex required I move my movies into particular directories.) |

I'm disc only. I understand how some think it more convenient to rip their discs so they can watch off a hard drive. Not my thing.

95% of the time I watch movies on disc. There are a few instances in which I watch films online or through iTunes (for instance, I only have the digital copy of Pride and Prejudice because I gave the Blu-ray to my sister). Otherwise, it just seems better to watch them on disc.

Been watching them straight off the disc, but I would like to back up my collection someday. Don't have nearly enough infastructure for it though; I predict I'll need over 100 TB or so to store all my films, extras, TV shows, etc. digitally.

Disc only.
I get the streamlined experience of ripping and playing content through a media center but I can't justify the money spent on something that is essentially duplicating the contents I already paid for. Case in point, if I wanted to rip all my discs (lossless) - assuming that all my 1220 movies are on a 50Gb disc - I would need roughly 65Tb of storage space ![]() |

I'm sure it's pretty common nowadays to have like 8GB or 12GB in a little media server, but if I can't get my ENTIRE collection on there I don't see the point of it. ![]() |

You guys rip the iso image, so it keeps all the menus and extras intact somehow? Or are you losing out on the extras and just adding the main feature films to these home servers? |
