Question Movies I'm afraid to buy on 3D blu-ray

There's a couple of movies I've been thinking about getting in 3D, but I'm worried about cost vs. value.

John Carter: This is a biggie. I really want to see and own this movie, but the 3D version typically runs in the mid $20's used on EBay. Even worse, I just found a new 2-disc BD with slip (!) at my Wal-Mart. I bought it for $14.97 until I decide what to do. I've heard the 3D version isn't that good.

Nightmare before Christmas: Another biggie. Disney put a lot of time in effort into this conversion and even did some digital touchups on the film. However, the 3D version is fairly expensive on EBay running in the high $30's and more. Reviews indicate the 3D and Disney's efforts here don't really payoff in a big way. My copy is the Skellington Head set on DVD, but the cost to upgrade here seems very steep.

Jack the Giant Slayer: Another biggie. My copy is a 2-disc BD with no slip from Black Friday. I got it for about $5. I've heard in this case the 3D is really nice and adds a lot to the movie. Funny how one version of a movie can be dirt cheap, while another version of the same movie can be so expensive. The 3D version is about $30 or more on EBay, most don't even have slips.

Tron Legacy: Almost forgot this one. My copy is a mint 2-disc BD with slip from release. Used 3D version typically runs in the mid $20's on EBay. As you guys may know, the 3D while good is only 'on' during some of the Net sequences. Not sure how I feel about rebuying the movie to watch something that's mostly in 2D (?) while wearing 3D glasses.

If anyone has any thoughts on the relative value of these 3D releases, please do share....Thanks.

All three are great in 3D IMO. I especially love John Carter and I always watch the 3D version, same goes for Jack the Giant Slayer, really good 3D in both. Nightmare Before Christmas is a bit more reserved but offers great 3D all the same.

Definitely get Jack in 3D. It was shot native and story-boarded in 3D for the VFX to impact the story in some key moments.

John Carter looks decent in 3D but doesn't use it creatively. It's more like a 2D-style movie with okay depth relief. I enjoyed it but wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is critical of 3D. It probably won't change the experience much either way.

Nightmare is one of the worst looking early conversions I've seen. I'd never watch it in 3D again. Poorly constructed depth in every frame. Look for some SBS 3D screenshots or clips online if you need to satisfy your curiosity.

I've been trying to decide on Nightmare Before Christmas 3D as well. I don't own any copies of the movie, and I've heard meh reviews on the 3D in it.

Jack the Giant Slayer has really good 3D, and its story actually kept my wife interested.

Not sure what you have for Disney Movie Rewards points, but you can pick up Jack Carter 3D for 2000 points or 1400 points plus s&p (the better deal); Tron Legacy 3D is priced the same as well.

Below is a link for all the 3D titles available thru DMR currently:

I'd agree with the prior posters' opinions on the three movies as well. I would add that Tron Legacy 3D has medium 3D overall, there's no in-your-face 3D but has some really good moments, especially with the light cycles.

As BleedOrange11 said, this one has some varying opinions.

The 2-D only is right at the beginning. In my opinion, the 3D with the IMAX presentation is totally worth it. BUT -- I'm a huge TRON fan.

If you can, do what DuranfanWI said and join DMR and use those points.
I have 3 of those movies you listed and have watched and liked them multiple times, the only one I don't have is a Nightmare before Xmas, I sold it as soon as I watched it and didn't care for it at all, we all have different tastes though.
Here's a link for it on DMR as it doesn't show up on their rewards.

PS it has a beautiful slipcover
