the set came out first. you could have easily waited for the price to come way down on the set if you were going to buy 3 of them. and you dont HAVE to buy the set. wait till the one you want is released.

To get you to pay for films you don't want. MGM employs this strategy often with the Bond series as well. If you're not a completist, unfortunately it means you just have to wait for individual releases. In the case of Star Trek, they will without question be released individually. But, it may be 2012 or so when the next film hits.

I still think it's strange that only First Contact, The Wrath of Kahn, Undiscovered Country, and The Voyage Home received individual releases.

you don't.
you can order the UK version to complete the set.
It is region free and
won't have any PAL content on it because it is a major studio release.
It's also cheap; shouldn't cost you more than about $20 to get it shipped to you.

I do too, because those are widely considered to be the best movies in each respective series. Usually studios put the lesser movies as individuals and make you buy the whole set for the one or two really good ones you want.

They are only accepting Star Wars Empire Strikes Back into the library of congress, but this isn't about archive and such a comparison would be considered off topic, wouldn't it? My suggestion, have the cost reduced, or wait until it does so.

I don't want the Trek blu-ray set at all. I would if it had all the same features as the dvd set. And it's not the special editions of the movies, either. Sloppy work, Paramount.

Paramount is taking a page out of George Lucas' playbook. Release one version, wait a few years, then release another, and then another with additiona matierial. It's a money-making circle.

Lucas has a ton of my money. I have the Ep. 3 - 6 on VHS, and then again on laserdisc. Then, bought the "Special Edition" set again on laserdisc. And then I, of course, bought the DVD's when those were finally released. Stupidly, I thought that was gonna be it. So, I'll probably buy them on blu-ray when they are released later this year.

Why would you only want Star Trek: The Motion Picture anyway?

My point is that you'd be one of the few that are picking up the set on store shelves and saying, "But I only want ST: TMP! Grrr!". The reason they only released FC, Kahn, UC, and Voyage Home as stand alones is because they're the most popular and best selling titles. Sales figures would be horrible on a stand alone release of the others, just as they were for the DVD and VHS sales.

It's similar, but worse than this:

Would you want the Indiana Jones Complete Collection? or just The Temple of Doom?
Star Wars Complete Saga? or just The Phantom Menace?

I know it's frustrating, but when sales figures for a lesser movie aren't so great, most studios generally just combine them with a greater package to increase their value.

Now, if you had said "I want Alien and not the whole Anthology." then I would say you'd definitely get your wish in the future, but the same isn't assured for ST:TMP.

Buy the set, sell the ones you have. Doesn't seem that hard.

Short answer...to make more money. If you are patient, the movies will eventually be released individually.

I know that. What about what I said gives the impression that I didn't read the OP? Having "the other two already in the set" does not put the OP in a different situation, because you either have the whole set or you don't, thus you either have the TMP or you don't. And btw, I do know what I'm talking about

The way I (possibly just like to) see it is that it's a good way for studios to get sales on what are considered to be "lesser titles".

For instance, let's say New Line decided to release the A Nightmare on Elm Street set on Blu-Ray. I would hop all over that shit, but if they released them individually, I may just cherry pick my favorites until I can find the rest for dirt cheap to complete my set.

Compare the amount of people who would buy Freddy's Revenge or Freddy's Dead to those who would rather just pick up Dream Warriors or New Nightmare. Now how many of those fans would like to just buy a set for a nice collector's item?

The point is, it's a good way for them to make sure they don't waste their time and money releasing movies that may not sell as well as others, for the most part. Kinda sucks for those who only want one or two films from a set, but it's just kind of the way things are.

Sorry if you think the Nightmare analogy doesn't apply perfectly, but it's the only franchise I believe I'd buy in a set, besides obvious ones (BTTF, Star Wars) and has a comparable amount of titles.

That's the shady part of the Trek Blus.

Now, I have to say - I am a fan of the sets. People cry about PQ, but I think they look great - and certainly head and shoulders above the DVDs (with the exception of not having the extended editions).

However, the fact that they have only released certain ones as singles is just dumb. I've seen people get burnt because they saw them on sale, picked a few up, and thought, "Oh, I'll find the rest later". When #2, #4, #6, and #8 are available as singles, logically most people would just assume they all are.

Gotta say, this is one of the shadier things in the Blu-ray world.
