Hey all, Nick Silverstein here. The CEO of Merge Soft Corp and the Producer of 3D and 4K Films. Man, were we busy. We would like to just say our new (which feels like our first proper real) 3D Film is finally done! It took us so long to do this one because we took our time and did it right. We went frame by frame and made a depth map per frame then we brought each frame into nuke and manually did the 3D Conversion Properly! It took us forever, we had very little sleep, lost a little bit of funding, but, we did it and we did it correctly! Also, we did the 4K Disc very well too. Our original footage was in 8K ProRes 4444 XQ LOG. We did both discs with an absolutely top notch soundtrack in Dolby Atmos and the 4K Disc is in Dolby Vision P3-D65 with a SDR Fallback for older devices. The 3D Disc is a single disc crammed with a mixed mode viewing experience in 3D MVC, 2D, and 3D Anaglyph with easy menu navigation. Can you tell I'm excited?

Congrats on finishing the product.

How long is the feature? EDIT: found you said around 30 minutes in the other thread

Not that I expect it, but I assume that there are no bonus or extras included -- a making of doc or extra audio track with some extra information.

You listed the BD as a BD-R, but is the 4K a standard replicated disc, a UHD-R (assume that animal exists), or something like a 4K on BDR like a couple of EU 4K items I've seen.

So, we spent a lot of money to do both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Hence why the price is so high. Sorry about that. Also, duplication was very expensive and we are building the infrastructure for Merge Soft Plus! Plus, we are working with Leia Inc's SDK to make our steaming service available on the Lume Pad! We will be the first streaming service available in 3D on a tablet and we ordered plenty 3D Blu-rays and 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays and more to come in soon! So, order up! lol

We have developed the technology to put a UHD BD Master Image on a single layer regular BD-R. So, yes it's a regular BD-R.

I just want to be upfront here before you guys get it... the 4K Version has a minimal glitch with the menu. the background video pauses within 3-5 seconds of the menu starting but, the interactive graphics (ig) and the actual menu works totally fine and the movie is perfect. We knew this before publishing this. It costs way too much to reencode the background video again in dolby vision.

The 3D looks and works perfectly!

I hope you guys/gals understand.

Are both 4K and 3D versions sold out on Amazon already?

EDIT: Nevermind! I figured it out. You have to click on the "See All Buying Option" link. I'm not used to clicking on that. I'm used to clicking on "Add to Cart" or "Add to List" and that's it. False alarm! Sorry.

Click on See all buying Options and it will show you the Marketplace Store selling it and allow you to add to the cart. I can't remember if Amazon was selling it direct a few days ago, but it's substantially more expensive than ordering direct from Kunaki/MergeSoft -- depending on tax I'm seeing $45 or 50 vs $75 . I'm not sure, but I don't think direct adds sales tax either.

I'm not sure I see a way to order both discs at once to save shipping costs unless there is a way to start checkout unless there is a way for them to create an order manually. $5 ea first class is a bit steep instead of putting 2 in the same package which should still be 1st class eligible since it's just a case and 1 disc ea

If you want to order both send me an email on my corporate email:
http://www.mergesoftcorp.com/contact/

I'll send you a PayPal invoice with discounted shipping and 10% off your order.

Also, because of the success of this film so far... We are going to do a coffee table picture book in 2D and 3D from the absolute best shots from this film!

I wasn't quite ready to order, but just playing around with the site seeing options. That combination sounds pretty tempting.

A coffee table book with Trains -- I feel a bit like Sheldon Cooper all of a sudden

I've been somewhat critical of some of Nick's previous 3D movies and agreed to do some testing for him on this new movie. I can tell you that he has put a lot of effort into upping his game on this one and I think it has paid off.

In addition to great visuals & 3D, I'd pay the money just for the soundtrack on this one.

Nick, the imagery looks nicely filmed. I can imagine this is a nice documentary of images for trains. For the 3D in the trailer however, the distant scenery is understandably milder 3D as with real life, but what range of 3D should audiences expect in regards to the whole film, as I'm only seeing mild 3D in the trailers presented above so far.

The shot where the girl is standing on the moving train, watching the scenery pass by, I would expect to be a stronger 3D shot since she's right there in the foreground with the camera.

Credit for your efforts to convert it into 3D in Nuke, that's professional grade software for 3D and converting a film into 3D yourself is a major task I can imagine, versus filming it in 3D which would make things much easier IMO.

Thanks.

Yes! Nuke is extremely complicated to use mostly with all the scripting you have to do. I'm thinking about making a tutorial to keep 3D Alive. Right now, I'm doing private (paid) one on one classes. If you want to learn email me and I'll give you my custom nuke template (paid) so you can convert any raw 2D footage into 3D.

As for the 3D Effect. we went more on the mild side because people complained about headaches and eye strain. Also, we got a lot of complaints that if the 3D Effect was too strong it would not view properly on 3D Home Projectors. So, we tried to avoid ghosting by making the 3D Effect have more depth than popping out. If you all like this one... "without headache inducing conversion errors" (which honestly you shouldn't because of the test discs we sent people) then, you're going to absolutely love our next one! We are not done... far from it! We are just getting started! We have a ton planed! Me as CEO, I've got so much creative ideas! Including 3D/4K Movies, 3D/2D Video Games, Merge Soft+ Originals/Exclusives, 3D/2D Books, Merch, etc! The Sky's the limit!

I see, thanks for the reply Mr. Silverstein. That sounds challenging that you have to write scripts of code for Nuke. I was hoping it would be straight forward parameters to adjust in the software, but I can imagine like a video game creation program, there are a lot more options through scripting.

So based on feedback from your customers, you mention that you went with milder 3D. Will you be considering investing in an affordable 3D camera set up for the future live-action films, or are you going to focus on converting your films into 3D?

I'm a huge fan of medium to strong 3D layering in films to really show how immersive 3D can be, so if your future 3D films can reach that level without conversion errors, that could be something. Thanks.

What's this about strong 3D not being viewed properly on home projectors? I'd like to know more, as my experience has been the opposite, and I wouldn't want to see future 3D efforts (ahem) derailed due to that.
