United Kingdom Horse Money (Pedro Costa) from Second Run in 2016

Second Run have confirmed that they will be releasing Pedro Costa's award winning film Horse Money on Blu-Ray in early 2016.

Already fantastic news, but even more so as it will be Second Run's debut Blu-Ray release!

This is excellent news. Wonderful film, and it's great to see Second Run dipping their toes into the Blu-Ray world. They put out some excellent stuff on DVD.

Wow, very cool! Was going to try and start collecting some more of their releases. Knew they had this one but didn't think they'd ever have a stab at Blu-ray - I thought the margins were too tight? Perhaps if this one sells well we'll see some more Blu-rays from Second Run!

Excellent news though...not even Eureka managed to release their Costa on Blu-ray!

Costa is more my idea of an original and inventive film maker than DGG, just to carry on our last conversation ;-)

Costa, along with Sokurov, is arguably the best pure image making in the feature film 'business' that is currently active.

Second Run have made a very wise choice releasing this on blu.

This is a really exciting development. I too suspect that Blu-ray will only be used sparingly by SR, but here's hoping they'll be able to make it work. Horse Money was in my top ten of last year and I urge everyone to check it out.

well technically it was only released this year. Last year it was on the festival circuit.

just in your top ten? What the hell was better than it? Please don't say Goodbye To Language

Well, this is absolutely the news of the year.

Second Run are the label that was missing from the UK Blu-ray market, and I honestly never thought they would make the jump, given their comments about doing so before. This can only be really, really great, and I think I can safely say that every one of their Blu-ray releases will be going in my collection.

These guys have a huge lineup of fantastic films most people have never even heard of, and every one of their DVDs is obviously a labor of love, so to think that they will be going to Blu-ray is just amazing.

Wonderful, wonderful news. I can't wait to order Horse Money.

Will pick this up to support them. Hope their margins are justified.

Guess the hassling paid off! Cinema Guild were supposed to put this out soon but there have been no announcements.

This is an essential purchase for me.

Costa is probably the best active imae maker in feature film along with Sokurov

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand it's great that Horse Money will be available on blu but on the other I hope this doesn't change the kind of films Second Run release.

Plus this is going to cause a lot of whinging. "Why won't you upgrade Tropical Malady?" "Why is this obscure 50s Czech film only getting a dvd release?".

Default Second Run start releasing Blu-rays! Pedro Costa's Horse Money

Spotted this in an Amazon newsletter:

Quote:
HORSE MONEY is the stunning new film from award-winning director Pedro Costa.

The film follows Ventura - the enigmatic lead of Costa's earlier groundbreaking film Colossal Youth (2006) - as he traverses a seemingly endless night populated by the ghosts of his, and his country's, past. From the restless spirits that haunt this decaying urban landscape, Costa conjures a spellbinding and unclassifiable cinematic experience.

Winner of the Best Director prize at the 2014 Locarno Film Festival, and featured in many worldwide critics' Top 10 Films of 2014 lists, HORSE MONEY is a hauntingly beautiful contemplation of Portugal s tumultuous past and uncertain future from one of the true poets of contemporary European cinema.

Second Run are delighted that Pedro Costa's HORSE MONEY will be their first Blu-ray release.
Amazon

Out in March 2016.

Arrow Films to handle sales and distribution for Second Run

Second Run has today announced that Arrow Films will be handling their sales and distribution from 1st February 2016 in Arrow’s first deal of this type.

It was always Second Run’s intention to be part of a cinephile community who care for, seek, discuss, present and watch such films – and now more than 10 years later Second Run have found themselves at the forefront of presenting rare and hard-to-see films from around the world to a dedicated and ever-appreciative UK and international audience.

Arrow Films are renowned for their incredible releases, from TV series to cult and classic cinema, combining state-of-the-art restorations with bespoke, striking and unique packaging.

Arrow are a global market leader in the premium home entertainment.

——————————————–

Alex Agran, MD, Arrow Films comments:

“This is a great opportunity for Arrow to be able to represent one of the finest and considered labels in the UK. I have been a long-time admirer of Second Run for its curated approach to distribution, its distinct brand and for its many accolades and awards it collects each year. We are excited to be able to represent Second Run’s rich catalogue at this special point in time for the company”

——————————————–

Mehelli Modi, Second Run Founder, comments:

“As we enter our second decade as an independent label, Second Run is really fortunate to begin working with Arrow Films to represent our sales and distribution. As well as being an exemplary sales company, in the past few years Arrow have become one of the very top labels for the discerning cinephile – showing clear focus, an excellent choice of films and presenting their work in the best possible editions.

Arrow’s whole-hearted understanding of a curated label such as Second Run clearly shows me that we will be in good hands – they have even released films from Second Run’s own wish-list! I really believe that this alliance with Arrow will provide us with a wider reach for our films and more opportunities for the filmmakers we work with – which is exactly what Second Run exists to try and do.

As a totally independent label, it has also given us the confidence to make our first foray into Blu-ray, with the release in March 2016 of Pedro Costa’s award-winning and extraordinary film Horse Money.

All this makes the next ten years of Second Run even more exciting to contemplate.”

——————————————–

To launch this new arrangement, Second Run will be releasing Something Different / A Bagful of Fleas: Two films by Věra Chytilová on 29th February; and on 14th March 2016 Second Run will release their first Blu-ray title, Horse Money.

Forthcoming releases from Second Run include the early works of Joshua Oppenheimer (director of Oscar-nominated The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence), Apichatpong Weerasehakul’s stunning debut feature Mysterious Object at Noon and Ján Kadár & Elmar Klos’ Oscar-winning Czech film The Shop on the High Street.

^This is amazing. SR is a terrific little label and if they are given the leverage of Arrow's greater muscle in marketing their stuff (maybe also include in Arrow site sales?), it would be a win-win situation for cinephiles.
