Casey Affleck to direct western "Far Bright Star" Starring Joaquin Phoenix

The last time they worked together, the result was the documentary I’m Still Here, but Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix are swapping raps for guns in fictional Western action in Far Bright Star.

Affleck follows his brother in going from acting to directing. Could be interesting. I hope Affleck learned a lot working on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. One of the best westerns of recent years. Also Phoenix is picky lately in his roles. John Powers Middleton (Oldboy, The Lego Movie and Run All Night) is producing the movie together with Affleck.

Far Bright Star will be based on the novel with the same name.

Plot:

The year is 1916. The enemy, Pancho Villa, is elusive. Terrain is unforgiving. Through the mountains and across the long dry stretches of Mexico, Napoleon Childs, an aging cavalryman, leads an expedition of inexperienced horse soldiers on seemingly fruitless searches. Though he is seasoned at such missions, things go terribly wrong, and his patrol is suddenly at the mercy of an enemy intent on their destruction. After witnessing the demise of his troops, Napoleon is left by his captors to die in the desert.

I like the Affleck/Phoenix combination. The description has shades of Gerry in it, though (the presence of Affleck may be the only reason I thought of this), depending on how much they actually show, so there could be cause for concern.
