I'm looking to purchase a rather expensive book and was wondering if anyone can help me with the book lingo. How bad is this book's description?
"Description: No. 128 of 150 copies, signed by author on front endpaper. Ex-library copy. Stamped on top edge of text block, which is dust soiled. Faint sticker ghost in bottom left corner of front cover. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Front & rear gutters and rear pastedown yellowed. Pocket cleanly removed from inside back cover, with only some evidence of glue residue. Embossed library stamp on bottom edge of last page of text. Boards look as if they might have had a coat of protective laquer over them." I obviously understand that it's a signed ex library copy. I just need a little advice on the other stuff. Thanks for any help I can get ![]() |

I'll take an educated guess in these...
"Description: No. 128 of 150 copies, signed by author on front endpaper. - signed by author ![]() Ex-library copy. - obvious Stamped on top edge of text block, which is dust soiled. -most likely the library stamped along the outer pages and its dirty Faint sticker ghost in bottom left corner of front cover. - someone peeled off a sticker but it still has some evidence of it being there Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown - no idea . Front & rear gutters and rear pastedown yellowed. - no idea, but expect the book to look old Pocket cleanly removed from inside back cover, with only some evidence of glue residue. - from library to put your rental slip in Embossed library stamp on bottom edge of last page of text. - obvious Boards look as if they might have had a coat of protective laquer over them." - hardcover book, no idea why the preservation method was painting, lol |
