Default Region Free Blu Ray Player?

Recently my region free Blu Ray Player, a Sherwood BDP-5004, stopped working. Not sure why since I didn't update the firmware or anything. With two young children in the house tho, I suspect they stuck a dirty DVD in there or something.
Just curious if anyone knows of any decent region free blu ray players available locally (NZ/Australia) without importing an expensive Oppo?

These pop up on TradeMe every now and then. My parents have one and works perfectly fine. Very good loading times too.

There's an Oppo BDP83se on TradeMe now for $680, not exactly cheap. The Wharehouse currently has Veon 3083BD-B Blu Ray Players in stock. Can those be made region free or does that only work on the older Veon 2916 model ?

I'm fairly certain that the one I linked to is the only Veon model that can be made region free. I have a Konka 3D player which uses a similar chipset, and the region free code doesn't work with it. I also tested the Veon 3D player in store and the code didn't work. You could always go into the store and ask to try it out.. they might huff and puff a bit but usually they have one hooked up already.

That Oppo player is five years old now though.

Keep an eye out here: http://www.rapalloav.co.nz/video/blu...blu-ray-player they occasionally have sales.

On this subject, are there any region free players that would be compatible (have working outputs for) my 5.1 surround system? My current Samsung player has the square coloured outputs in the back but a lot of blu ray players only have HDMI and sometimes the round coloured outputs.

I used to have a multi region BD player a long time ago, but firmware issues and playback problems in switching regions annoyed me too much. I found it a lot easier and a hell of a lot cheaper to import a Region A bluray player and buy a step down 110v-240v transformer to supplement my existing Region B player than buying a region free player. It also meant that any potential play back problems involved with the firmware of multi region is moot. Never had an issue since.

I have 3 multi region players (2 Oppos and a Toshiba), and have never had a problem with any of them, other than a faulty USB stick for the mod kit in my Oppo BDP-93 when it was originally purchased, which was replaced, and an issue with the playback of the Sopranos complete collection (which was also with the Oppo BDP-93), which had nothing to do with the region mod, it was an Oppo firmware issue.

My first BD player was a Samsung P-1400, which I imported from the states. Quite possibly the buggiest player on the market. Firmware updates stopped being released not long after.

Speaking of Firmware.. I just checked my player (Panasonic DMP-BD60) for updates online, and low and behold.. after three years, they have released a new one. Just did the update, and now the only two titles I could never get to load past the 'Play Movie' option.. finally load! yippe!! (Now You See Me, Catching Fire). Oh, and my Multizone chip still works.. whew.

I have one of those Laser brand ones. My other half got me one from Big W last year for X-mas. So i could watch all my Region A coded tv shows. Does the job.

I have the old Soniq B100 and it's worked very well for me. Had it since 2013. The only annoying thing about it is the fact that I have to switch between regions when playing a Region B after a Region A or vice versa. But that's an incidental problem compared to the luxury of being able to watch titles that are otherwise Region A locked. Sometimes the start up is a little on the slow and laggy side, but it has been good.

For crying out loud, one day they just need to start releasing titles that are NOT locked or region coded at all.

Thought I'd ride on the coat-tails of this thread... :P

I'm also looking for another region free player. I currently have an Oppo BDP83 which is great, but I'm thinking of reorganising my setup and I need a compact player.

Only issue I have is that I need it to output 50Hz content as 50Hz, none of this 60Hz conversion crap. Most players that I've seen like Panasonic/Sony etc. are really good players but they all convert to 60Hz.
So, I want a good brand player that's region free-able. That outputs 50hz(and 60Hz of course) but is also compact. It'd be awesome if Oppo released a smaller player but everything they release is massive. :P

Edit: Bah, just looked at Sony's latest players and they support 50Hz now. Also about half the size of an oppo. :P
