I keep all my dvd's i upgrade. How i see it, i paid good money for them at one time so to try to sell them on ebay or something ; im not going to get anywhere near for what i paid for them. And, you can forget trying to unload them at a pawn shop. The shops in my area give you 25 cents for dvd's, 2 bucks for blus. Better off just keeping them.

Nope - I unload my DVD's as soon as I get Blu's to replace them - I don't have room for the Blu's/DVD's I own anyway, so any extra space I can create from unloading my DVD's is helpful. That being said, I don't typically replace DVD's with Blu's. If I have a DVD, I'll typically keep it & not upgrade.
Since I know I won't make any money off the DVD's, the few I do replace are donated to my local library. That way I know they're going to a good home....IMHO the time & hassle it would take me to try to sell them (as mentioned above, most DVD's aren't worth anything anyway) is not worth it.... I keep the DVD and make my own combo packs and through out the DVD packaging unless it's a limited edition or rare DVD and then I keep everything.
And some of the collections I kept. For example somehow I ended up with 3 different Trilogy for the original Star Wars Trilogy all with different special features, so I kept those. And I also have two different DVD collections of the first three Indiana jones films. Those were very nice DVD sets when first released, well and still are for the most part because of the extras. I have all of them myself. |

I actually sell my DVDs as I upgrade.
It is what eBay is all about and I apply the money to my Blu-ray budget.... |

Is it worth it to sell your DVD's when you upgrade to Blu?! Used DVD's seem to be worth almost nothing these days, unless they're rare for some reason. As another poster said, you almost certainly won't make back what you paid for it, so why bother?! Unless you really need the money. However, you have to consider shipping costs if you sell them to someone that you'll have to ship them to. The way I see it, I would actually lose money on these deals if I tried to sell them that way.
This reminds me of when I was in college back in the '90's - when I would sell my used books back to the college bookstore at the end of the semester, I got very little for them. It almost wasn't worth it, but I did it because I wanted to get rid of the books & the little money I did get was better than nothing. I always donate my unwanted DVD's to my local library, or give them to family members/friends who may want them. The library will give you a form so you can declare this on your taxes, but I've never benefited from this. However, giving them away is a win-win situation for me, since I get rid of them & make room for my Blu's - plus, I'm giving them to someone - or an organization - who can benefit from them. As far as keeping DVD's that may have special features that the same Blu's don't have, I don't care - I barely have time to watch these movies, let alone the special features. I feel the same way about slip-covers/artwork. If a DVD has better slip-cover pictures/artwork than the Blu, that's fine - I'm still unloading the DVD, with the DVD slip-cover/artwork. My concern is with the movie/tv show itself, not the cover artwork. I recently got the Blu of Casino Royale, and the version I got had a very bland cover; it was white, with a pic. of DC. Conversely, the 2007 DVD cover had far superior flashy, silver-ish artwork. However, I still got rid of the DVD after I got the Blu... Agreed. I would spend more $ in gas driving to the pawn shop than I would get for the DVD's themselves. Forget it... Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 12-02-2015 at 06:35 PM. |

Yes Pawn shops are a rip off if you ask me. I don't shop at them either, I can see how there are people out there that want to shop at them, but for me I like to buy my blurays or dvds new, simply because with it used most likely they have been treated like crap and the cases are usually wore out and look bad too. It's just a personal opinion. As far as dvds go I'm getting to the point in keeping them. Krull for example the DVD is loaded with special features and the bluray is not. I still have my star wars dvds as with the ewok movies too speaking of that I'm so hoping for a bluray of those someday. Some dvds I give to my son or others I will keep simply because of the cover or also favorites that I liked and have cherished throughout the years, I have all 4 Christopher reeve Superman movies individually on DVD and the bluray anthology set, I like the cover for Superman II DVD simply because it has General Zod and his gang on it, and I will use the dvds for whenever I do travel

I checked one time at Half Price Books what they typically pay for dvd's and I was told anywhere from 50cents to 1-2 bucks....
I felt that was pretty pathetic.... I would rather donate them to a library or give them to friends and family vs that... |

I'd say there are still a few scenarios when it's worth keeping the dvd on hand. Obviously there are still many, many dvds out there with extras that were never ported over to blu ray. And there are a number of dvds that feature the original theatrical cut, while the blu ray does not (Stripes and Dumb & Dumber to name a couple). Plus there are tons of dvds out there with original soundtrack mixes that aren't on blu ray, albeit in lossy form.

I get rid of DVDs as I upgrade to blu-rays except for box sets and un-edited versions. In my DVD version of the Evil Dead, a crew member can clearly be seen standing by the bridge as they drive across. This was edited out on the blu-ray version. And we all know that Star Wars has edit changes with each release.
