I already did, I saw the trailer for this a few years ago, and it looked interesting. I was a 8 year old kid when the animated TV series first aired here in the US.

I hope they eventually get around to releasing the animated TV version Star Blazers on Blu-Ray, it is currently only available in the US on DVD.

According to Starblazers.com they are releasing the Blu-Rays of Star Blazers 2199, which is an updated version of the original TV series, although the release will only feature the original Japanese language with English and Spanish subtitles.

I seem to recall not-so-good opinions on this movie when it was released in Japan.

But I could be mistaken.

[Show spoiler](Still wants the Space Battleship Yamato animated films released in the US.)

The reviews were rather mixed, although most were saying (if memory serves correct) that the movie was ok, but nothing special.

Still for fans of the original TV series, and the damn cheap price this pre-order is at the moment, you can't go that wrong. Even if the film is so-so, your out a whopping 10 bucks, the price of a fast food lunch/dinner.

I pre ordered this the other day. 10 bucks for a new release is a no brainer even for a movie that may be only so so.

Just because they changed some story points from the show... Some of the battles are simply breathtaking IMO. Worth all 10 bucks easy!

Frankly many of the things from the original TV show are kind of hokey by today's standards. Even though it may have been a translation malfunction from the original japanese, but I remember them stating that
[Show spoiler]after the first time they warped from the earth's moon to the mars, that had traveled instantly THOUSANDS of light years
.

Preordered! Heck after importing all the Yamato 2199 BDs from Japan, this will feel like it costs pennies!

I'm partially blind buying this (I've seen some clips on YouTube) and it looks awesome.

So, what is the chance of an English language dub for this release?

I agree. I just put my pre-order in. For $10 it's a no-brainer. I think this should be a blind buy for any Starblazers/Space Battleship Yamato fan. I've always loved the original animated series, and this live-action film was a blast. Sure there were some changes from the original series, but I think they showed a great deal of respect for the original concept, and the space battles were indeed breathtaking. It was a joy just to see the Yamato like never before, in a live-action film with real special effects!

Now we need:

- The original series (all 3 series)

- all the animated films

- Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection (2009 animated revival film using tradional and CGI animation, available in theatrical and vastly changed director's cuts)

- Yamato 2199 (new fully CGI animated remake series in Japan - simply stunning and a very faithful remake of the original series)

The live action film is a great start. The original series and Yamato 2199 and Resurrection are all available in Japan on blu-ray, but they're insanely expensive.

According to this recent comment on Amazon, no chance:

"It should be noted, that there will be no English dubbed version. All releases in DVD and BluRay will be in Japanese with English subtitles. This is due to the contract with actor/singer Takuya Kimura (who plays Kodai). No big deal. This is how the film should be viewed."

Actually there is going to be a US release of Star Blazers 2199, the first 4 episode Blu-Ray is being released February 27th, 2014. The cheapest I have seen it online at the moment is through RightStuf.com at $44.99.

But as I stated in an earlier post, it will be in Japanese with English and Spanish subtitles ONLY, no English dubs. Which to me would sound weird without the original series dub actors voices, probably the primary reason I was not as big of a fan of the original third series, they were unable to locate the people responsible for doing the voices for the first two series.

But considering it's been 35+ years since the original dubs were done, I am sure a few of them are dead or long since retired, and it's safe to say their voices would sound a bit different today.

Isn't that blu-ray release for the remake? Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_B...ip_Yamato_2199)

Additionally, these days there are probably more fans of the original Space Battleship Yamato then the Star Blazers adaptation among the film's target audience in the US (ie, anime fans).

Yes it is the remake, unless we get really lucky I doubt we are going to see the original series released here in the US on Blu-Ray. I remember the first handful of episodes of the first series looked much rougher compared to later episodes, I cannot even imagine the cost involved in restoring the three original series.

Agreed, for me it comes down to growing up watching the original series when it first aired on television and being familiar (and perfering) with the American dub version. Had I never seen the original series when it was broadcast, I would most likely seek the Japanese Yamato version instead.

I have watched the Japanese version of the show, the first series anyways, I found it difficult to sit through, I kept expecting to hear the familiar (to me anyway) American voices coming from the characters, and found that fact quite distracting from my enjoyment of that version.

The original series was released over in Japan on blu-ray a while ago, fully remastered, and from what I've seen of it, the quality is rather amazing - far better than we've ever seen before - light years beyond the US DVDs released long ago. But I highly doubt we would ever get that series here in the US, sadly.
