Contrary to what people believe, Meryl Streep does not get nominated for just anything. From the trailer of Ricky and the Flash, it doesn't look like anything Oscar caliber.

The trailer doesn't look like much, but she looks great in it. She gets nominated for a lot, and I couldn't find an alternative for her for best actress.

I don't know much about this Suffragette, but isn't she the lead in that? Seems much more of an Oscar type film.

She's more supporting from what I've heard. Carey Mulligan is the lead.

Have they said whether or not they are going back to five or keeping it the same? I think it would be kind of ironic if it went back to five this year since i think part of the reason why they expanded was cuz of The Dark Knight, and if they go back to five now Mad Max would probably get screwed. I haven't seen it yet, but i hear it is awesome.

From the Cannes screening, Irrational Man is a more of a minor Woody Allen movie. I'm also willing to say Southpaw won't get any nods at all.

Spielberg's newest will likely get the most nods. I'm hoping Crimson Peak surprises enough that it might be the genre pic of the season, like Gravity.

Brooklyn's probably the favorite for Best Picture right now. Early word has been positive, John Carney makes audience-pleasing movies (he also did Once and Begin Again) and it's from the Fox Searchlight promotion machine.

Suffragette is probably running second right now but it feels like it could be like The Imitation Game: a movie that audiences love but the Academy ends up being indifferent on (but still snags a statue or two).

This year's Gravity is probably The Walk. Big event film in 3-D opening at that same slot as Gravity with a great story (Philippe Petit's tightrope across the World Trade Center) and a very capable cast and director. Also, it's the safer Gordon-Levitt movie to shower praise onto.

On Best Actor and Actress: Eddie Redmayne's definitely a favorite to repeat with The Danish Girl. Ben Foster could be a sleeper with The Program (assuming it finally gets picked up, it was supposed to be ready last Christmas). On the Best Actress race, it looks like Maggie Smith and Saoirse Ronan are early favorites. Unless one of the actors from Suffragette emerges.

I've got the feeling The Walk is going to be a very minor note for the awards. The 3D will mainly only really go with the big set piece, unless they really gimmick it up and add strange sequences for the sake of the 3D. Just got a wary feeling about it.

Carol is a definite as well, if only the combat the gender politics from last year, unless The Danish Girl counts.

Carol feels like an also-ran. Lionsgate's been sitting on it since last year (I was convinced it was going to end up as a Lionsgate Premiere title) and Haynes' movies have never been big awards movies (also, the backlash over Mara's role in Pan could get to Carol as well).

Mad Max Fury Road could get nominations for sound editing and mixing, although Star Wars may eventually take those categories.

A lot of these predictions look good now but won't hold up in November and December, inevitably a half-dozen movies pop up at TIFF and so on that blow people away and immediately become favorites for the top prizes.
