Right now the only English-friendly version on Blu-ray is the Japanese "Global Edition" release, which currently sells for $56.79 shipped from Amazon Japan...

It looks like the Global Edition is being brought over? It shows a release date of May 2nd on Rightstuf. It doesn't appear to have any changes from the 2011 release though.

It's a great movie, but I feel like $85 is too much for a single BD-25 with no HD audio. I guess they are really afraid of reverse importation cutting into their sales of this title.

I would be upset that there's no way to easily get the ADV dub, but knowing Your Name. will be dubbed by the Bang Zoom crew and there dismantle the consistency of having Makoto films dubbed by the ADV/Sentai crew, I'm not longer bothered by that.

That's not been made known yet, as Discotek isn't very communicative in terms of specifications in their announcements. Hopefully they'll get access to the LPCM 4.0 @ 3072 kbps track that was used on the initial 2008 BD instead of the Dolby 4.0 @ 320 kbps track used on the 2011 "Global Edition", or at least a losslessly compressed DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD version of the LPCM track if disc space concerns are an issue.

The one thing that gives me hope is that Discotek did a very good job with their 2015 BD release of Castle of Cagliostro, re-using the same A/V encodes that its 2014 Japanese counterpart had. Let's hope they do the same here.

I'll probably pick it up sooner or later, as it's the only Shinkai movie that I don't have on BD (excepting Voices of a Distant Star, which was rendered in SD to begin with so the R1 DVD of it will suffice). Compared to the price of the Japanese Global Edition which was previously the only other English-friendly BD release, it's a steal even at MSRP.

No. It was only worth $TEXAS back during the times when it was OOP, which were after ADV went kaput in 2009 until Bandai Entertainment did a new release in 2011, and then from after when they went out of business themselves a few years ago up until Discotek released a DVD of their own in mid-2015.

You can still probably recoup $12-$15 for it off of eBay though, depending on the edition. Some people really liked the first dub, which was only available on the initial ADV Films DVD from 2008. All other releases including the 2011 Bandai DVD, the 2015 Discotek DVD, the 2011 Japanese "Global Edition" BD, and this new Discotek BD have the second dub by "Bang Zoom!" instead of ADV's VAs.
