Cool Add selection for DVD-R when submitting/editing titles

Many collectors like to differentiate between what is a DVD, and what is a burn-on-demand DVD-R. Currently, that option is not available.

Can we add it, either as an option for "Disc info," or as a choice for the "Media" drop-down menu when making submissions?

For example, most (if not all) of the Warner Archives DVD releases are DVD-R. On Amazon, they all come with this disclaimer:

Quote:
DVD-R Note: This product is manufactured on demand when ordered from Amazon.com. [Learn more]

There are other examples too, like:

Just a thought.

Unfortunately, these are becoming more popular with blu-rays as well. Screen Media in particular has been steadily pumping out BD-Rs.

I like the idea, though there are two possible challenges (if we really want to be exact) of which I am aware.

1. Sometimes a DVD is released, then goes oop, then is re-released as a DVD-R, which Amazon sometimes assigns the same ASIN too. 2 different versions, but 1 ASIN. I'm guessing the best thing in those rare instances would be to remove the ASIN from the previous DVD entry and assign it to the new DVD-R entry?

I'm sure it wouldn't be insurmountable, but we would want contributors informed enough to know about it and how to handle it.

2. I recently found out that sometimes *some* of these listed as DVD-R's are professionally pressed DVD's. I was told that for multi-disc sets, like TV shows and film sets, Warner Archives presses an initial batch which I was told is sold exclusively through their site (but then someone else said that no, some of those get out to at least a few other sites). An example being Almost Human. I have not verified this.

Later, I heard that Fox had a sale on their DVD-R's during the holidays, and in anticipation of increased demand, pressed some. So these all have the Amazon warning:

Quote:
DVD-R Note: This product is manufactured on demand when ordered from Amazon.com.
But some/all from Fox were still pressed. I found out about this last month and tried ordering 3 from Amazon. Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23: The Complete Series was a burned DVD-R. However, Witches Of East End Season 2 & Graceland Season 2 were both pressed. Differences between the two versions included the fact that the pressed ones were:

- Shrinkwrapped rather than cellophaned
- Had a "Made in Mexico" stamp
- Did not have the "Manufactured by Amazon.com kydc, Lexington, KY" in the bar code field
- Did not have bar codes stamped onto each disc.
- Were silver discs and not purple

Other titles that I have told have been ordered and were pressed include:

American Dad S10
Bob's Burgers S2
Bob's Burgers S3
Cleveland Show S3
Crazy Ones: The Complete Series
Crisis S1
Doug: The Complete Series
Louie S3
Louie S4
Salem S1
Wilfred S3
Wilfred S4

So for these titles at least, and likely more, 2 different versions exist with the same UPC, some being pressed discs and some being the DVD-R's that they advertise. Though some have likely sold out by now, assuming that all were originally given a batch of pressed discs around the holidays to begin with. YMMV. Users could still make notes (in the same way that I make notes for all the Target exclusive dvd's with bonus discs that I have in my collection but add the regular dvd here instead because they're not entered) and add the "standard" version anyway. But if we're being specific enough then sometimes advertised DVD-R's exist in both formats for the same title.
