Default Star Wars: The Force Awakens won't play on Panasonic SA-BTT370 Blu-Ray player

I have a Panasonic SA-BTT370 Blu-Ray player that was a hand-me-down from a family member. I've played DVDs on it, but never a Blu-Ray. I tried playing the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-Ray on it last night, and I got the UNSUPPORT message on the little display panel, and a message on the TV that the disc couldn't be read.

It seems the device is up to date on the latest firmware - version 1.59. Its network connection works. I suppose it's possible it's a hardware problem, but I'm holding out hope that there's just something in the new disc that needs a firmware update to support. Maybe I'm dreaming...

Panasonic wants 10 bucks just to answer my support call - do I have any better options?

If the player has an SD card slot on the back, try putting a memory chip there

It has a SD card slot on the front - is that it? Should it be some particular kind of card?

More adventures in Hand-me-down Blu-Ray players:

I got Avengers: Age of Ultron from RedBox last night. The Blu-Ray player provides the same reaction: UNSUPPORT

Should I now assume there's some hardware problem with the unit?

It plays DVDs without problem - is it possible that the Blu-Ray hardware is dead, but the DVD components are working?

The player knows quality when inserted.

Try disconnecting the network cable and getting the disc to load. It may be trying to access Internet content it doesn't support.

Thanks for the good suggestion. I tried disconnecting from the network (it's been using Wifi - so I switched it to wired to make it disconnect) - and got the same results. I also found a setting to Prohibit downloading of BD-Live content, and that didn't help either.

In all cases, I insert the Blu-Ray disc, and the unit ponders it for about 30 seconds before concluding that it can't read it.

I'm starting to suspect a hardware problem - any other ideas?

Mike
