Default Need help, please what is profile 1.1

I have a PS3 and love Blu-Ray movies, my wife wants to buy a stand alone for us and to move the PS3 into the kids room. I must confess I do not understand the whole profile 1.1 and 2.0 thing. If I buy a player that is not 1.1 updatable will I have to buy a new player that is 1.1 to play movies that are profile 1.1, and what is 2.0 and what will that mean? thanks........

1.1 is to support PIP, so if PIP is important to you make sure you get a 1.1 profile player. 2.0 I believe is for the BDLive function coming down the road for online extras, could be wrong though on the later.

If you buy a profile 1.0 player. From all that I have read it will not matter if you buy a 1.1 or 2.0 disk. It will still play in your 1.0 profile player. Just certain features like PiP and other little features will be unavailable. 2.0 is nothing more than the BD-J live feature. ie built in eithernet adapter for online content.

1.1 is the PiP function , just get a 40gig and remote as your second BD player problum solved! all the discs will work in all the players 1.0 1.1 2.0 & the Ps3 is 1.1(PiP-ready) right now & will be 2.0 in the future So you cant go wrong with a 2nd one

If you update your PS3 to the latest firmware (easy to do if you've connected it to the Internet by going to the Settings - System Update on the cross media bar), your PS3 will upgrade to firmware version 2.10 and have the ability to play back profile 1.1 (Bonus View) content.

I don't know offhand if the Philips BDP9000 can be upgraded to 1.1/Bonus View, so you may want to do some research (or someone here who knows for sure can fill you in).

Profile 2.0 (BD-Live) is an optional feature that allows for internet connectivity. There aren't any players that support this feature (yet), but again the PS3 is widely expected to pick up this function at some point. The Philips unit most certainly does not have the ability to add this via firmware since it has no Ethernet connector.

Thanks for the info, I have updated the PS3 but it is my kids system, and my wife wants a stan alone. I dont care about PiP just the movie so as long as it plays the movie I am happy.

For that, the Philips unit will suffice if you're stuck on brand loyalty. Otherwise the Panasonic DMP-BD30K seems to make a lot of people around here quite happy.

Based on that reasoning, your wife should definitely not be making or influencing decisions when it comes to electronics. Get the Panasonic. It is 1.1 and probably the best player out there right now.
