Peck is one of my favorites of the era, even though he was sort of the George Clooney of his time. But you gotta love his acting in stuff like The Yearling. I think they modeled those new Direct TV commercials with the "settlers" after that.

Love Peck but not really Clooney at all. I find his movies really bland and boring.

I just finished watching my Kino Lorber Blu-ray of Yellow Sky.
A group of outlaws, led by Gregory Peck, survive a brutal trek across Death Valley after robbing a bank, and end up in a ghost town that is populated only by a tomboy woman, played by Anne Baxter, and her grandfather. When the outlaws realize that these two lone residents have a hidden cache of gold, disagreements and violence ensue, as one of the gang members, played by Richard Widmark, is intent on keeping all of the wealth for himself. The situation is further complicated as Gregory Peck's character falls for the granddaughter. Yellow Sky plays out like a slightly watered-down version of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, but it still stands tall on its own merit. The first half hour of the movie does a great job of capturing the desolation of the area, as well as conveying the dangers of being thirsty in a desert land. The final hour also works quite well, as greed takes over the men. The music score, by Alfred Newman, adds a lot to this engaging tale. There's some print damage, but the video presentation of this Blu-ray is just fine, as is the audio. The commentary track, which I'm listening to right now, is informative with background material. Well done, Kino Lorber! |
