It is. Very dark, seedy and disturbing. It was quite notorious in its day. It's quite close in tone to HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER so don't expect anything glossier.

Excellent, this is one of my most wanted. A grim film, but compelling.

Very cool film. Breaks my heart every time something I like this much gets released by TT (rather any of the numerous other labels that generally put out much more complete, interesting editions at much more reasonable prices).

Would you believe? filmed on actual buildings.
Interior sets at number 7
Demolished just right after the production.

I paid about $20 for Sony's MOD DVD-R five years ago, so $30 for a Blu isn't that bad a deal. I'll never buy another DVD-R again from Sony as so many of those titles are now coming out on Blu.

Got my copy today. The quality is the best I have seen the film. Is it normal for narrow black bars to exist on the left and right side for 1.66:1 aspect ratio?

It is, but wasn't this filmed on 35mm with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio?

I suspect that the 1.66:1 is the true projection ratio despite what IMDB seems to suggest.

I found this comment on an earlier DVD (which was framed at 1.85:1) review site...

Quote:
Whether the aspect ratio is the correct one is another matter – it never really feels wrong, but the Columbia logo that opens the film certainly looks cropped and the opening title itself is a little tight in frame. Given the film's age, an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 or, at a push, 1.66:1, seems likely, and TV cut-off can be an unforgiving beast. That aside, this is a very fine transfer that exceeded my own expectations of the disk.
