Warner Bros Joker (2019)

Quote:
Warner Bros. Pictures and DC are in the early stages of developing at Joker origin movie, according to Deadline. The site says that The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips will co-write the script with 8 Mile‘s Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, to be produced by Martin Scorsese and Phillips.

The Joker origin movie will be the first film under a new banner that Warner Bros. has yet to name, but which will expand the canon of DC Comics properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the characters.

The Joker has previously been played by Jack Nicholson in two Batman movies, by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad. The site adds that Ledger will reprise the character in the Suicide Squad sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff, Gotham City Sirens. This new film, however, will feature a different actor, possibly younger.

Also of note is the setting. Deadline claims that “the intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.”

While it’s unknown when this Joker origin movie would be released, Phillips and Silver are already writing the script.

I’m told that Phillips and Silver are writing already, but there is nothing firm on where this will fit into the DC schedule.

So they're creating a CGI Ledger for future movies? Or bringing him back from the dead?

Still would be better than Leto.

Really? I mean....I get that they are simply trying cash in. But really? The entire intrigue of the joker IMO is that we dont know his backstory or how he got "that way".

They just cant help themselves, can they? Ugh.

Could be interesting. Yeah, it would take away from the intrigue of the character, but the origins were covered before in 1989's Batman and in the comics without sacrificing much.

What would be really interesting is if they relay the Joker's origin through his own POV, making him an unreliable narrator (as he is in TDK anyway for his own scars stories). Done as a psychological thriller, it could really mess with our heads all Memento style.

What makes you guys say that? The article says they're casting "a different actor, possibly younger."

EDIT:
Well duh, I missed the "Ledger reprising his role" bit. I just automatically assumed they meant Leto.

Heath Ledger's lifeless corpse would put in a better performance than whatever the hell Jared Leto did in Suicide Squad.

No more Jared Leto Joker. I wasn't a fan of his interpretation, but there goes the DCEU film continuity. Martin Scorsese is producing and I still don't care. The Joker doesn't need his own movie.

Yes, I know I'm a hypocrite who supports Dr. Doom and Venom solo films, but we've already seen good versions of The Joker on film, so he can be put to rest for awhile.

Between this and the live action Red Son rumors a few weeks ago I think WB/DC may be setting up doing a series of "Elseworld Tales" live action films. It would be an interesting angle to tackle that won't have the claims of copycatting the MCU, but of course explaining the separate and non-continuity nature of this or other similar stories will be the real trick.

Meh, normally I wouldn't really want this but I like the names involved, especially Scorsese and Phillips. If it weren't for Leto I'd be way more enthusiastic.

An elseworlds imprint isn't a terrible idea, and would allow stories like Red Son and Justice League New Frontier to be made without having to worry about the DCEU.

This however is a bad idea at face value. The Joker is a character that is best left in a shroud of mystery and an origin story is something that won't benefit him. This could end up being a well made, well acted movie but it won't add anything to this character.
